...but not so much the rest of what Jimmy does, nor his fans.

Sounds like he hasn't heard of Buffett's previous novel, or his collection of short stories.

(I'm not going to slam the guy for not liking Buffett's music or accompanying "culture." He's welcome to his opinion, just like I'm welcome to my opinion of his band. We can agree to disagree, especially since he's probably rich and I'm a nobody!)

Sounds like a honest "book report" by Pert. He said that he dosen't get parrothead and stuff, but he liked the book. At least he reads. Most drummers and the like are only interested in THEIR own music and hobbies. Rush is.... I think a good band also. I've seen them a couple of times. I've seen Jimmy over 20 times. so You know where I will spend my $$$$$

Neil is a great writer himself. Though I haven't read any of his books. I was commenting on his music/lyrics/words.

IMHO: Rush = Best 3-man band EVER!
IMHO: Jimmy is still a much larger draw for me and my dollar.

I suspect that he is only familiar with the “songs you know by heart,” which, I think most of us agree, is not Jimmy’s best work. He might appreciate some of the lesser-known songs.

That’s part of the irony, here. Rush and Buffett share more similarities than he may realize – huge cult followings, minimal radio airplay, others who just don’t “get it.”

Rush is actually my favorite band. And, as a drummer, I’m a Peart fan. Still, the more I read of his likes and dislikes, I would be inclined to “cordially decline” drinks with him.

I think it includes a lot of Buffett's best work, it's just that so many of the songs have been played to death in concert. He Went to Paris is also on there, hardly what I would call bottom rung Buffett.

That's true of a lot of artists, not just Rush and Buffett.

All because he doesn't share your opinion of Jimmy Buffett's music?

Neil Peart has written several books over the years, and in those books, he has put forth his thoughts on many subjects which have been a source of great debate for Rush fans. There have been several debates on a Rush message board I frequent as to how he feels about the fans, how he treats the fans, and what he owes the fans, etc. I tend to stay clear of said debates, but I "cordially decline" to share his feelings about JB's music (obviously). Having said that, Rush is also my favorite band, and a fantastic live show. JB and Rush have been the bane of my disposable income for many many years...... 8)

PeretHed66 you pretty much stated my thoughts exactly.

I think a good way to put things is like this.

I love my phriends and family for who they are, not what they do.
I love my musical choices for what they do, not who they are.

Nope, not because of his opinion of Jimmy's music. I've read all four of his books, and for the most part, I enjoyed them. However, he shares enough of himself that he just seems like someone who's company I would likely not enjoy.

So what if Pearl Nert likes JB's book. Goddamn, who gives a s*** about him? He's a DRUMMER.

Very well stated but the phrase "you can't judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind. There's a lot of people I've encountered in life that may seem like total jerks on the surface but are actually old softies on the inside. Perhaps Neil falls into that category.

Does Neil being a drummer make his opinion any less valid? He's also a lyricist and quite a gifted one at that. It's not everyone who's words were inspired by the likes of Ayn Rand.

Thanks for the post. I grew up on Rush and love the band (I am a drummer so it is a requirement). I appreciate his view on the book, because he is a talented writer. I know his wife and child died a couple of years ago, and I heard he took off on a motorcycle for a year. My guess is he and JB would get along just fine.

The making fun of drummers thing goes back to when U2 accepted some MTV award from presenter Phil Collins and they made fun of what happens when drummers start to write songs and sing.

Interesting perspective.

I imagine Peart would enjoy "Beach House On The Moon" or "Come To The Moon". He's probably just mad that Buffett doesn't sing about space or science fiction in every song.

I'm not a huge Rush fan, but I like their singer. She has a beautiful voice.

Typical bashing of Rush......we (Rush fans) are used to it.

by which particular harbor?
:o Gosh, do all you folks have time to read these books? I feel lucky if I have enough time in a day to read the comics! I've been trying to find time to finish ASPOL for a year now...

(Now I'll get told I should be reading now instead of catching up on BN :) )
