Jimmy Buffett discussion

I think it includes a lot of Buffett's best work, it's just that so many of the songs have been played to death in concert. He Went to Paris is also on there, hardly what I would call bottom rung Buffett.Buckice wrote:I suspect that he is only familiar with the “songs you know by heart,” which, I think most of us agree, is not Jimmy’s best work. He might appreciate some of the lesser-known songs.
That's true of a lot of artists, not just Rush and Buffett.Buckice wrote:That’s part of the irony, here. Rush and Buffett share more similarities than he may realize – huge cult followings, minimal radio airplay, others who just don’t “get it.”
All because he doesn't share your opinion of Jimmy Buffett's music?Buckice wrote:Rush is actually my favorite band. And, as a drummer, I’m a Peart fan. Still, the more I read of his likes and dislikes, I would be inclined to “cordially decline” drinks with him.
Neil Peart has written several books over the years, and in those books, he has put forth his thoughts on many subjects which have been a source of great debate for Rush fans. There have been several debates on a Rush message board I frequent as to how he feels about the fans, how he treats the fans, and what he owes the fans, etc. I tend to stay clear of said debates, but I "cordially decline" to share his feelings about JB's music (obviously). Having said that, Rush is also my favorite band, and a fantastic live show. JB and Rush have been the bane of my disposable income for many many years......Tiki Torches wrote:I think it includes a lot of Buffett's best work, it's just that so many of the songs have been played to death in concert. PeretHed66 you pretty much stated my thoughts exactly.PeretHed66 wrote: Neil Peart has written several books over the years, and in those books, he has put forth his thoughts on many subjects which have been a source of great debate for Rush fans. Very well stated but the phrase "you can't judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind. There's a lot of people I've encountered in life that may seem like total jerks on the surface but are actually old softies on the inside. Perhaps Neil falls into that category.Buckice wrote:Nope, not because of his opinion of Jimmy's music. I've read all four of his books, and for the most part, I enjoyed them. However, he shares enough of himself that he just seems like someone who's company I would likely not enjoy.
Does Neil being a drummer make his opinion any less valid? He's also a lyricist and quite a gifted one at that. It's not everyone who's words were inspired by the likes of Ayn Rand.JustDucky wrote:So what if Pearl Nert likes JB's book. Goddamn, who gives a s*** about him? He's a DRUMMER.
Thanks for the post. I grew up on Rush and love the band (I am a drummer so it is a requirement). I appreciate his view on the book, because he is a talented writer. I know his wife and child died a couple of years ago, and I heard he took off on a motorcycle for a year. My guess is he and JB would get along just fine.Buckice wrote:...but not so much the rest of what Jimmy does, nor his fans.

She?Gumbo wrote:Interesting perspective.
I imagine Peart would enjoy "Beach House On The Moon" or "Come To The Moon". He's probably just mad that Buffett doesn't sing about space or science fiction in every song.
I'm not a huge Rush fan, but I like their singer. She has a beautiful voice.
Typical bashing of Rush......we (Rush fans) are used to it.Glorfindel7 wrote:She?Gumbo wrote:Interesting perspective.
