Yikes! One reason I was glad I was never in management. I did have co-ops reporting to me and had to do disciplinary action with a few...but never had to let any go.PHAW Webmistress wrote:so...............does anyone have any experience in firing someone? does she have any idea that it's going to happen? ie - has she been talked to numerous times about her performance, or is she oblivious to the situation?
good luck....

you know that staples (or is it office depot) commercial where the newbie says "we're out of toner" and the other guy goes "shake it" and the newbie picks up the copier and shakes it? That's my life at the moment

First, sorry for your impending task of axing.
It's not easy, but it does depend on the situation.
I've been in the position a number of times (doing the "letting go", that is!
)
Layoffs just s*** - the firee usually did nothing to warrant dismissal. I've been almost as upset as the person let go... even tearful
Firing a good person who is under-achieving - Go over the points of contention leading to the dismissal calmly and maintain strong eye contact.
You have to keep the upper hand, and although it's difficult, you have to remember...
YOU didn't bring on this situation so much as the other person, did you?
You'll offer to write a positive letter of recommendation as some consolation.
Firing a bum - Don't be gleeful or condescending, and follow same steps as above. as you don't want someone to go postal!

Leave no room for discussion
Give him/her the reason for the termination and be done with it
Have someone waiting in the wings (another manager) to collect her things if she doesnt want to return to her desk.
Depending on company policy, walk him out the back way to avoid embarrassment
End by explaining the severance pay, COBRA and / or what she can expect in her last check and when and how that check will be delivered
End by thanking him for his service and wish him well.
btw......why wait til Fri?
Good luck!

I've actually had to terminate more than a few people during my run as a manager in Hotels. I always get right to the point and say it as calmly and kindly as possible as I feel that often the person can sense i coming and then i give them a second to digest it and then end it by saying kind things about them. even if its something small it is nice to try and make them feel good since you had to be not so nice. I then walk them out and wish them well.
