Trampoline Trouble :-?

Post by carolinagirl »

We finally got son a trampoline last November after him wanting one for YEARS! He is 14 now. Yesterday, he landed wrong and wrenched his neck. :-? We called his pediatrician, and she said get him to the ER. We went and they did X-rays. About 9 p.m. last night the hospital calls and tells us to come back in for a CAT scan, says the radiologist saw something suspicious on the X-ray! Keeping panic at bay, we go back...

Turns out, the radiologist told the ER doc that it could have been a pulled ligament, but the CT scan doesn't seem to indicate that... At least it's nothing worse. Nick is on pain meds and wearing a collar. We may need to get him an MRI tomorrow. Please send Nick some Phin power!

Get this, I ask the name of the radiologist, so when I tell the pediatrician she can follow up adequately. At first the ER doc just looks puzzled, shrugs and says he'll try to get ahold of him. Later he came back and admits that our CAT scans are "outsourced" on the weekends to AUSTRALIA!!! and the radiologist is a resident somewhere in Australia who has already left for the day. Have you ever heard of such a thing? :o :o :o

Hey Creeky, can you track him down for us?

Sending loads of Phin Power from the Jersey Shore.
If that neck keeps giving him a problem get a recommendations for a good chiropractor.

First of all best of luck w/your son, much phin power headed his way.

Now about the radiologists...........Yes! Up here in MA there is a group of rads that own a "home" in the islands somewhere, they take turns going there for 3 months at a time, and yes they do read from there when it's their turn.

With the internet it's very, very easy.

Much north coast phin power. Hope he's out of pain soon!

I understand that trampolines have been quite a contributor to ER's all over the country.....

When my son was seriously injured in the middle of the night last year, the hospital did all sorts of emergency tests. The results were sent by computer to be read, and they were read in Australia as well. They explained to us that "after hours" the readings are done on day shifts around the globe, following the clock.
Some will go and some will stay. It doesn't matter anyway ......

I join the others in hoping recovery is quick and complete.

as for the outsourcing to Australia. if you read Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat, he talks extensively about outsourcing and addresses the reasons why it is common for the reading of XRays and other diagnostic tests to be done overseas. Cost, and efficiency are among the factors as the film can be read and interpreted during their daytime while the appropriate personnel are working, thereby providing results in a more timely manner. And, as an aside, I highly recommend the book-not always an easy read, but a most enlightening one.

Actually, Bonnie already knows one.

The distance is the problem.

Ask "Cap10Chiro" if he makes long-distance house calls! [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

Or if he's coming to the Tallahassee concert.

Does the trampoline have one of those "security" nets surrounding it? Not that it caused your sons accident....and (((Phin Power))) headed your way....but I think those nets give more of a false sense of security then they actually help.

My kids have a tramp in the back yard with one of those nets and I've seen them intentionally lean toward it or even bounce off of it. To which I quickly said NO, don't do that!!

We didn't have such things when I was a kid. We used the common sense method of one-at-a-time, or maybe two, if we were both of age enough to know how to behave.

Not to mention (then why am I saying it??) that the netting makes the tramp harder to move around and store. We used to turn the tramp on it's side and store it next to the house in the winter, but you can't really do that with the netting that stands taller off the tramp then the tramp does off the ground.

It came with a security net, but we never put it on... Son wanted us to put it on so he can jump around against it, too!

I still don't understand how he did this injury... Landed on his back and bounced back up and turned his head... Said it's a move he'd done lots of time, just turned his head wrong.

Appointment with a spine specialist today at 1:30! His pediatrician is married to an orthopedist, so they moved things along. They may do an MRI in the office. He says it's all a waste of time because he's feeling better every day now! Kids!

Sorry to hear about your 'lil guy. I'm not a trampoline fan at all. You are a much braver mom than me!

Hope he continues to feel better.

We didn't get one for years because of hubby's concerns, but we've had a neighbor who had one for a couple years, and he's always been cautious... A friend was visiting, so with an audience, sometimes caution goes out the window! :D
