Recovering Lost PC Files????!!!!????

UGH!!!!!!!!!
So, I go to look for some cover art that I made for one of JB's live shows and guess what? The folder where I kept it was empty. Not only was my cover art gone but also some priceless photos, videos, word docs, photoshop projects, web designs I made, and a concert or two including Jim Croce's last show!!!
I have tried two different programs to recover. I have Recover My Files and OnTrack. With OnTrack, I recovered the files but they are not playing well with others. When I open them, it is just blank - the audio files, dont play. With RMF, it isnt looking any better. I have been spending countless hours trying to get these files back. I am far from a novice when it comes to pc's but I have never come across this situation before. So, I am throwing my hands up and looking for advice.
This could have been alot worse. A few months ago, I bought an external drive so I could store my JB concert collection. Guess where those files used to be? Those would have been wiped out too at which point I would have hung myself.
Has anyone been through this and recovered their files in working condition?

i ran into that issue myself a few yrs ago. I bought an external usb drive and unplug it and store it when in in use from now on. No real advice for you on this one but i do know there are tools out there to recover them. The FBI used something like disk scraper or something like that. What I do from now on is store them on that usb drive and if i really want to save them burn to CD. My father-in law goes so far as to put his disks in a safe deposit box. Take it from someone who works with computers every day, "DONT KEEP ANYTHING ON YOUR PC THAT IS IMPORTANT".

For the most part, I dont keep anything important on my pc. I have an external drive which is why I havent committed suicide.
I can always get back some files but these photos, word docs, photoshop designs, etc. I cant. I have used the 2 top of the line recovery programs but they just arent doing the job. I searched for disc scraper but havent found anything yet. Looks like more countless hours in my future.
Thanks.

No words of wisdom, just a "sorry it happened".

You might want to back up anything on the same drive that may be important to you. It might be the sign of the end for that drive.

Another cavet. I carved up one of my drives into multiple logical disks thinking if one failed I could get the other one(s) back, but then the whole platter stopped spinning or wobbling. I was really bumming then. Thats when I bought a usb drive. Sorry we can't help much.

don't worry. I'm sure your file is safe. It's just being taken care of by the PC gremlins.
sorry about your lost work.

That's awful, I feel your pain and if you do recover them let us know what you did. Personally I'd go to some kind of repair person.
Which reminds me - I need to burn some backups of my files.

not that this will help you now, but for us Mac users, we have this to look forward to

oh yah, finally....
Other than this, I back up to a HD semi regulary, then burn really important stuff to DVDs and give them to my parents. If your data is in one spot, you wont have it for long.

I just saw this Sean... sorry to hear about your problem
I thought that my external drive that contains all
of my music and my back up of the computer hd.
Lucky for me it was just the drive housing that was shot
and I was able to put the hard drive into a new case and
all is well
Good luck
