Routine colonoscopies are recommended for those over 50. Have you had one?

Colonoscopy

Post by carolinagirl »

Over 50 you ought to have one.

I just received word of beloved aunt in Philly passing away overnight.

She had colon cancer that spread to her liver. Two of my brothers got to see her as recently as over the weekend. The rest of us were making plans, but learned she was really too out of it for visitors.

This was preventable. She'd never had a colonoscopy. Have you?

Had one a couple years ago - the prep is worse than the procedure (at least you get to sleep thru that).

My hubby has one every three years, as recently as two weeks ago.
Pre-cancerous polyps removed every time! :o

My doctor asked me at my last physical if I was ready to schedule one, and I said I'd wait til I was 50. I think I'll go ahead and get one anyway, since there's history. :(

I will definitely be checked.....hubby already has.....

Under 50 ~ had one in November. All was clear.

My mother had Colon Cancer in her 50's, and the Doc told me that I should have a Colonoscopy 10 years before her Cancer was diagnosed.
(She had successful surgery. Image)

So I did.

I'll have another in 5 years.

Under 50, but I still get one every five years (Crohn's Disease). Like they said above, the worst part is that nasty stuff you have to drink the night before. (Although I've been told there's now a pill that will do the same thing, so that'd make it a piece of cake.)

For the ones I've had, I've always been awake for the start, but usually fall asleep during the procedure. That's the beauty of demerol--you know exactly what they're doing to you, and you still don't care! [smilie=blush.gif] :D

In my family we call it the pooper-probe and it is a rite of passage (only because the icky "c" word happens frequently in my family).

Hmmm..I only had mine 3 months ago and wasn't offered a pill???

Oh well, doesn't matter.

The testing is easier than the disease no matter what I have to go through.

Do not think about having one get one done.

Had one 2 years ago when I was 36. Was having some assues

Colon Cancer is one of if not the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer. But it needs to be detected early enough. A friend of a friend died from it around age 54. His Dr told him if he had had a colonoscopy at age 50 they would have caught it in time.

As for the prep the day before, pick a drink that you don't really like. A friend still can not drink apple juice to this day. he had so much that day he got sick of it.

I had the pill(s) option, and TOOK it !!! It was not bad at all. Just every few hours the day before, take some pills and lots of water and yeehaw. I had my first colonoscopy a couple of years ago. It was a breeze, and I must say, I kinda liked that drug they give you before they take you in the room. wow. I was so chilled, I didn't care WHAT they did. They warned me that when you come out of the procedure, when you're waking up, you might say or do funny things. I didn't but the guy in the bed next to me in the recovery room was passing gas and laughing a LOT and his wife was mortified. He was some guy in a suit.

I'm over 50, my daughter works for the biggest one in town. Both her and my wife are urging me to do it and I know that I should.

What troubles me is that my daughter told me she could get me in with the top guy.....I think this might be a set-up.....REVENGE? :o

Had my first one last Monday...

I agree, the prep was the worst part.
My dad was dianosed with colon cancer in May, had surgery in June.
It was stage three and he had the radiation and is currently undergoing chemo and doing well.

He never had a colonoscopy, nor did he have any signs of trouble.
