Does anyone have any first-hand experience here?

I'm sure that the locals of Utila have experience there. :o :o :o

I haven't been there but I've heard that it is nice if you aren't looking for tourist traps.

I was there for a couple of weeks in 2001. There's not much to do there except dive and drink.

There are not a lot of "tourist attractions" but the inexpensive accomodations were popular with European backpackers.

My "hotel" was owned by the shop I was diving with. My room was $3 a night as long as I was diving from their boat.

Elrod, I didnt know you were a diver too !! You wouldn't happen to have any pics posted anywhere from Utila ...would you? I'd love to see um. The local dive shop here is sponsering a trip to Truk Lagoon in 2009. I'm already saving up my pennys for that one. :D

The visibility was poor enough that I didn't even unpack the camera.

The visibilty topside was slightly better, but I used less than a roll of film on the trip. www.ester.net/scuba/utila.html
