My suggestion: ditch the manic, over the top "I'm a wacky DJ" approach...mellow out a bit. One of the main reasons I listen to RM: to chill out and relax.

Question? Was this someone that RM found for themselves or was he foisted off on them by Sirus? Is he actually a JB fan or a fan of trop-rock or world, Caribbean music? He doesn't seem to 'get it'. (Okay, that was two and a half).

I listened again today...around 4 o'clock....it didn't get better. His patter is lame....very forced (this may get better)...and really...I just don't care about the traffic he has to deal with on his ride home.

Back to the playlist it was.

The whack job act (I assume it's an act) is something you can get on any two-bit free station (and too many other Sirus ones).

Do you think they were making a play for the tailgating vibe? That can be a bit manic and energy-filled...but it doesn't transpose well at all to the radio.

I'd suppose it's a challenge to find the right balance between working to engage the live crowd at Margaritaville in Orlando and keep the non-live radio crowd interested and happy. It sounds like he's really focused on the live audience so far and may risk alienating the others for that immediate feedback. And on the perception re. not being a true Buffett guy, perhaps he could make it interesting by having some listeners help train him....

radio 'personality' aside, it really surprises me that RM would hire a non-Buffet-knowledgable guy as a DJ.... given a choice, I think I'd prefer a slightly weaker DJ who's more savvy about Buffett and Buffett-esque music...

Honestly, I can't imagine it's too difficult to find someone with both; there are a lot of talented Parrotheads and/or Buffett-friendly folks out there.

I wonder how and why the new guy got the gig?

Okay...so JD is back in the booth this (Wednesday) afternoon...

Does anyone want to take bets on if he has calmed down over his weekend and took some RM music appreciation classes?

They really do need to still find a balance between the live 'audience' emcee act and and being an actual on-air DJ.

First, quit telling us he's going to drink a margarita after his shift. I swear he said it thirty times on Sunday! Just drinking one doesn't qualify you for anything! :P

He needs to do some research of JB's career, the gulf coast region, the lyrics of the songs, etc.. I did hear a tiny bit of information given about a song he was getting ready to play, but then he played the wrong damn song!!
JB, as we all know, is a story teller and his songs reflect that. There are numerous sources to find JB discussing inspirations for various songs or explaining the stories behind them. JD Spradlin needs to dig around, read Jimmy's books, understand the songs and provide a little insight....oh, and play the song you say you're going to play!!

I agree....he is not getting better. I can listen for maybe a half hour (depends how much he's talking and how much he's playing). Folks at work are starting to laugh and take bets how long I make it each day. I think they have the pool going already for Wednesday.

They need an on-air DJ with some live crowd expeirence...not a Disney-trained club DJ.

So you guys prefer mellowness to excited?

Sometimes playing music can make a disc jockey excited. It does me.

Excited in one thing....enthused, thrilled...all great,...especially when combined with knowledge, insight and genuine interest and love of the genre and a willingness to share that...FANTASTIC.

Manic, hyper and acting like a drunk on red bull with limited insight and few clues to what they are actually playing....not very interesting and down-right annoying.....and also very different.

Enough of JD!

Post by mac&pmfhan »

Did anyone hear this guy today?

JD: "That was off of Peter Mayer's new album, Spare The Tire."

New album??? Spare the Tire??? How about spare the BS! This guy is ridiculous. If I want a top 40 dj I can list to am radio. Who does this guy know?

RM has been the best radio in years and they go and screw it up by putting this guy on the air. This guy knows absolutely nothing about JB and the Coral Reefers.

Has anyone else had enough?

Sirius offered Howard (no "K") Stern $500 million to sign on with them, then paid him an $80 million bonus after year one.
Jimmy is rumored to earn a mere $85 million / year from all his ventures combined.
Maybe they could get HIM to actually host the show for those kind of bucks! Now THAT would be cool. Don't think it would help pull them out of the red though.
