Cold Remedies?

Post by baybreeze »

So......18 days before the Key West trip, I get this lousy cold !!!

I am a preschool teacher and my classroom is a hotbed for infection despite frequent sanitizing. Just too many sick kids around every day. I've been taking combination echinacea / vitamin C capsules since the beginning of the school year and it seemed to be helping as far as not getting sick.

But now I've got a cold and I need to get over it FAST...........

Any recommendations of things that have worked well for you?

i agree with penny. muscinex is great. just remember to drink lots of water with this stuff.
flush out those nasal passages also. i use a saline solution spray called ocean or your local drug store probably has a generic.

the saline spray is a great preventer of colds and anything sinus related. believe me, i used to be the queen of sinus infections until i discovered it.

I agree, Carol. Saline sprays are good for many things. And zinc, echinaccia, and vitamins all help. :D

ColdEeze helps. It's the zinc in it that does the job, I think. (Zicam, Airborne... anything with zinc)

Just an FYI PSA....the zicam nasal swabs/spray have caused some people to lose their sense of taste and/or smell...long term. :-?

And if you take the recommeded dosage of Airborne you are putting toxic levels of vitamin A into your body. :-?

Something to think about...

I prefer liquor.. heated.. not boiling, but warmed... sure.. it may not help with the cold, but it doesn't really hurt either. :D

Yup...a Z-pak shouldn't be doing anything for a cold...it's like usling a hammer when you need a saw. In fact, the Dr. that prescribed the Z-pak is doing a big "no-no" here unless he/she expects you're especially susceptible to and your immune system is unable to fight any potential bacterial infection that might occur.

Prescribing antibiotics for a clear viral problem (e.g. a cold) is the biggest contributor to creating antibiotic resistance (that and people not completing their antibiotic prescriptions when they do need them). If you over use antibiotics when they're not needed, you reduce the chance they will work when they are needed. It's just not smart (again, unless there are extenuating circumstances).

In my book, any physician prescribing antibiotics for a cold is practicing irresponsible medicine.... :-?

I hope you feel better soon.

They are right on with the Saline Spray....We are in dry air so much...ie:heating, air conditioning.....I use the Saline every day....

and I take colloidal silver every day....They make it in a spray form as well....It is an incredible natural antibiotic...and yes, you do need to be careful of how much you take....But I have been using it daily for over 6 yrs and have not had a cold in all that time!

One might start coming on...but it never gets past the stuffy nose part..or lasts more than a day or two, at the most...

You can make your own Saline Spray...I used it on my kids when they were little....
