Coast of Carolina

Post by jamaica mistaica »

I was wondering if anyone knew the meaning of the song Coast of Carolina and if there is a specific location or meaning to Jimmy. It has a meaning to me, but i'm just curious of the true meaning, thanks

good question. I always assumed that it was based on one the trips Jimmy and his ol' buddy Groovy took from Carolina to Bermuda. Again, just an assumption. I am sure someone has the real answer . . .

I heard it was a song about missing a true friend (Groovy) who passed away around the time the song was written. That's my take.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

I could be wrong, of course, but I think there are two layers:

1. As stated, the reference to "Groovy" Gray, who passed not long before the song was written;

2. I believe the underlying reference is to Jimmy's relationship with his wife: My "evidence"

" There's come a lot of Mondays since the phone booth that first night" -- I remember reading that Jimmy met Jane outside a phone booth at the Chart House in Key West, and "Come Monday" was written for her.

Jane is from South Carolina

The reference to dealing with relationship troubles in the past ("walls") and moving forward ("finally get it right")

Maybe?

and Groovey did introduce the two . . . I believe.

Knowing that I was at the concert when it was performed publicly for the first time, I thoght perhaps there would be a good introduction. I just went and ran throught the cd's, no CoC. M'ville blocked it out, I hadn't realized it before. Maybe someone has the Charlotte Show, which was the next one on the tour, and can listen to see if there's a story to go along with it.

I had forgotten what a great set list that was in '04. We got If the Phone Doesn't Ring, Changing Channels, Carnival World, Growing Older, Jamaica Mistaica and Fruitcakes as well as the introduction to Coast of Carolina. :D

I also thought it was about his relationship with Jane - their split and then getting back together again.

I think Rum&alime has it right. That's exactly what I've always thought ... that song is special for us too ... as is the coast of Carolina :D

Groovy was from Charleston, SC. He introduced Jane and Jimmy.

Jane is from Columbia, SC. Met a man at the bank the other day who

went to school with her and her brothers. Her father evidently coached

youth teams as he was this mans coach.

Jimmy's family vacationed in Hilton Head Island. I beleive his father

thought it was a very beautiful place.
