http://www.desertusa.com/monvalley/ It's a Navajo nation park.

I think you'd be beter off heading north from "SLC to the Tetons and Yellowstone, Old Faithful and all that stuff, ya might even see a GRIZ! Jackson Hole Wyoming is a great little western tourist town.
And I can play this here guitar,,
Gonna thank my lucky stars.

Thank you stars!!

Well, from my house in SLC to Monument Valley generally takes me between 7 and 8 hours of driving depending on weather and traffic conditions. So to do it in a day won't give you a lot of time to see much.

Closer to SLC is Moab which is about 3.5 hours away and is the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands. You also drive past the Book Cliffs which are beautiful at sunset.

A little further away to the Southwest is Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon and Brian Head. That's about 4.5 to 5 hours of driving each way.

Now if you want to stay closer to SLC but you want to see bare rock, head up Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons which will take you up to alpine valleys and some nice ski resorts. Or you can head up Weber Canyon and see the Devil's Slide and then take I-84 east til it merges with I-80 and head west to Park City and then back to SLC.

Park City is a fun little city with lots of options for playing. You have skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling in the winter, golf, biking, hiking, horseback riding during the rest of the year.

Hey, Creeky!

Have enjoyed your posts over the years........glad to finally meet ya!

Monument Valley......you need to see it at dawn, at dusk, hike it, drive it. It's not all over the internet because facilities = one hotel and two campgrounds. Premiere spot to pitch your tent is on the Navajo Res part of the valley......you are on a cliff overlooking the valley.....pretty spectacular!! The hotel is about location, location.....it's got a tiny indoor pool, a so-so restaurant, a tiny museum. The highlight, besides the location (!) is that they will loan you lots of movies that were filmed there.

A cool thing about MV is that it's a doorway to the Navajo and Hopi Nations. I've spent a few summers exploring ruins, canyons and hanging out with the people who live there and could work out a fabulous several day visit for you if you're interested. Camping is free or cheap.......motels are pricey for not being in a city, IMO. Let me know!
