I don't want to step on any toes here but there is something I really want to know...
The Daytona 500 is called the great American race. I understand some people are really p*** that ther is now a foreign automaker represented in the race. However, the car represented in the race by the foreign automaker is the only one made in America. The so-called American cars are made in Mexico and Canada. So what's the problem?

I'm on top of the world, lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
You're love's put me at the top of the world

I thought that was kind of funny when I heard Darrell Waltrip say that at the start of the race
. From what I heard, the "American" teams are really concerned with what the Toyota team is going to spend on driver salaries, research, etc... I think they're afraid that if they don't pony up, drivers and crew will migrate.

Jugding from the number of Toyotas you are likely to see in the parking lot at any given NASCAR race I'd say this is a non-issue for most fans. NASCAR fans root for DRIVERS. My wife and I are big Dale Jarret fans and we will follow him over to Toyota. I grew up as a FORD man but I got over that a long time ago. I choose the best vehicle at the best deal I can make at any given time. My driveway has Jeep, Hyundai, Ford, Honda and an Isuzu.

I don't feel this way, but I've heard people say it's not where they're made, but where the money ends up. Yeah, they pay people to put them together here, but all the profits head overseas.BoozeInTheBlender wrote:However, the car represented in the race by the foreign automaker is the only one made in America. Of course Dodge (Daimler-Chrysler) is not an American company anymore either, so that argument is a little biased.

As a fan I could care less that Toyota has joined NASCAR. My problem is their track record of joining racing leagues, dumping absurd amounts of cash to win in turn raising the operating cost for everyone involved, then abandoning the league and moving on. They have a lot to prove and I would hope that NASCAR covered their bases with them contractually to prevent them from doing this here like they have in the past with others. Thankfully redesigns of the body and motor all need approval so it's possible they'll be kept in check a little better in NASCAR.
If Toyota doesn't win a championship in 5 years they'll consider pulling out of the sport. They have a notoriously short attention span when not winning.

It's kinda big and it goes all the way around the 2 car garage (which is too full of crap to hold any carsPencil Thin wrote:SuperTrooper wrote: My driveway has Jeep, Hyundai, Ford, Honda and an Isuzu.Wow!...sounds like a big driveway.
I just got my AUTOWEEK NASCAR special edition and they seem to think many fans have negative opinions about Totota entering the sport. I'm sure there are a lot of folks out there with Chevy emblems and blue ovals tattooed on their biceps, but I think there has been a shift in attitudes as NASCAR has grown outside southern redneck core audience.

For SuperTrooper
I love racing and I am a big Jeff Gordon fan. I don't care what none of ya say, I love him and was glad he came in 2nd Sunday, woo, hoo!!! But I am very fortunate that I live where I do, Hickory, NC. We have several different drivers from this general area. I work for the county government and contribute to the United Way fund and the county had a luncheon for us and guess who was the speaker????

(The picture was made this past year the dates just wrong) He is a great guy and very supportive of our community!
Now if I could get a picture of me and Jeff like this?!?

considering none of the cars or engines are actually made by any of the "car manufacturers" it's a moot point whether its a chevy, ford or toyota. now the issue of toyota coming in and dropping big bucks upseting the status quo is....

That's ridiculous. Profits for any corporation are invested wherever they can make the greatest return, no matter where in the world that may be. Do you really think Ford only invests its profits (if it ever turns one) here in the U S of A?CoronaMargaritahead wrote:the sources of the money go to America where the company is located. for that japanese crap that goes to Japan.

considering the amount of parts sourced from overseas, every domestic is really an import.CoronaMargaritahead wrote:look where the companies started. thats where I buy from. I have no problem with them joining the sport, as long as they are doing it to learn about Stock Cars.
I'm not convinced you can do that without a long term committment.
