I was fortunate enough to live in Key West for a short while but rarely left. I will down Miami way and plan on driving down to visit some old friends. Curious to know if anyone could offer some advise of places to stop on the ride down from Miami? Bars, fishing, eats, whatever - would appreciate the suggestions. Thanks!

Denny's Latin Diner: MM100 in Bayside. Great food, good liquor store next door.

We always stop at The Wreck, MM59, right before the Seven Mile Bridge. Good food and cheap pitchers of beer. :D

Also try the No Name Pub at Big Pine Key for pizza. Or try a rumrunner or mudslide at Holiday Isle in Islamorada, MM84.5.

Holiday Isle definately... a good redneck vacation spot. You walk a circle of like 4 different bars.. overlook water. Great little stop.. never made the ride to Key West without it.

You just might be a redneck if you spend $225 a night for a room?
Seriously, although we have stayed there in the past for as little as $69, last Fri the cheapest room available at Holiday Isle was $225!
We ended up staying in a small cottage down the road instead for the night, but really enjoyed camping at Key West the past 6 nights.
We're all rigged up, the bikes and boards on the utility trailer (call me a redneck again I guess), and I'm just catching up with Y'all now inside the van using the free wireless at the campground.
Skateboarded Duvall street again tonight, nothing like it.
Longboarded in the dark w/drink in hand and no lights, none of the cops said a thing. Not neccesarily a smart idea, but alot of fun.
Leaving for MI at 4:00 am, we all made it shoeless since last Thursday w/ only one refusal of service.
Too bad it has to come to an end.
No big deal, Cocoa Beach for the Easter Surf Festival next!

I'm a bit of a creature of habit but I always stop at the Lor-E-Lei (sp), about MM 81 or 82 on Islamorada, on the west side of the highway, great waterfront bar, awesome sunsets, usually live music.

Of course usually start the trip down at Alabama Jack's on Card Sound Road, bit of detour but a nice drive, especially on the Harley.

There are plenty of other great spots on the way, these are just my favorites.

Have fun and the BIG thing about making the drive down...BE SAFE!!!! Lot of people get in a hurry, it's a dangerous stretch of road, but cool 8)

Tried the US 1 crawl once with a buddy, many many years ago. Started at Alabama Jacks and had one drink at every bar we could find on the way down the Keys. I think we made it to Marathon before we figured we'd better stop drinking so we could make it the rest of the way to KW. Young and stupid, wouldn't try it today, too many bars.

YEP. Excellent guide. We followed it when we drove down to Key West a couple of years ago. We also tried to stop and have a drink at several of the bars. By the time we got to Papa Joe's outdoor tiki bar, we were silly. And I wouldn't have known about Alabama Jack's and wouldn't have seen my first manatee.

I remember seeing this "guide" a while back and being surprised that there was no mention of Schooner's, if ya walk from Turtle K's straight to Shrimpboat, it's not hard to miss?!?!?!? (my favorite spot)
