Parade magazine's Personality Parade has a question this morning that reads: Has any rock band duplicated the Grateful Dead's fanatical fan base?

The answer is: No. But Phish came close, and the Saw Doctors - blah blah blah

What, don't they consider Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band a "rock band"? :o

I think they have the wrong PH reference there   Maybe parrotheads need to give Walter Scott an education ;)

I read the parade this morning and had the same thought. Jimmy should have been in there.

Hmmm......not convinced that we've reached that stage yet. Sure, the parking lot scene is similar but Deadheads took fanatical to a whole different level. Not sure how much of the Parrothead population has devoted themselves to following Jimmy around the world. The Deadhead scene took their love of the band and made it their reality. Parrotheads take it and make it an escape from reality.

'course.....I could be wrong. [smilie=asa.gif]

Here we are .... with how many websites? How many "ophicial" PH clubs? We just put a spin on it ... getting drunk for the sake of charities instead of getting stoned for the sake of .... getting stoned?

Aren't we supposed to be "Like Deadheads, only with jobs"

And I won't mention the 1000+ pages devoted entirely to guessing songtitles here in BN   8) 8)

I just hope Deadheads got as much pleasure out of what they do as I get out of what I do. :D

Because Parrotheads SHOWER and Most of us have REAL JOBS. A Very MINIMAL amount of the real deadheads actually held real jobs.

Someone (who's read the article  ) should email Parade and ask why Jimmy Buffett wasn't included....

Their response should be interesting.

How could you all forget Jimmy's line (an insight which has justifiably made him very rich):

I've been to TWO Greatful Dead concerts, and I found this to definately be the case.
Their music was great, but their fans were enough to make me want to vomit.

Walter Scott is old and out of touch!

Just a week ago, he reported that the thoroughbred Barbaro was stable and recovering...

Parrot Heads are phanatical... Dead Heads just wander along behind the tour, eating peanut butter and selling bad acid :o

Giving ol Walt the benefit of the doubt, Barbaro may have passed after the print deadline for Personality Parade.

I think that's the key difference. Instead of packing up the ol' Vee-Dub microbus and hitting the road we stay and play locally. Nothing wrong with either plan...just different.

Actually, my favorite show so far was one year when my best friend & I packed up & went to Knoxville to see him (10 hrs or so). Sat behind the stage, which was kinda neat. Crashed in a hotel & drove home the next day.

Walter Scott's column (and much of Parade 'magazine' for that matter) are publicity resources for the entertainment industry. Questions in Scott's column usually coincide with major film, television and music releases. Stupid questions such as 'What is my favorite actor so-and-so doing these days?' are the norm, and the answer is innevitably 'Funny you should ask, so-and-so has a new movie coming out this weekend!'. Mindless fluff.

Wow!! Sorry Staredge, I'm kinda feelin sorry for ya! You're right, tough crowd!
Parrotheads are a different breed, and a proud one too!!!! I love my 3 - 4 weekends a year that I get to escape to Buffett shows but I think it is safe to say that none of us had made more than a monetary sacrifice to follow the band.

I think if the stinky, non "real" job holding, (whatever that means?) stoned to get stoned hippie is how we stereotype Deadheads then I sure hope that I'm not the ex-frat, office cubicle working, getting drunk for charities? (getting drunk just to get drunk) yuppie that others may perceive me to be!

I think it's a safe bet that Mr. Buffett knows he has created his own legacy and doesn't want to belong on the same list as the Dead. Different time, different priorities, different music, different scene. Enough said.

'course.....I could be wrong.
