are former presidents and vice's allowed to continue to be referred to as the pres. or vice of the US?
Thinking of oscars last night and AG being introduced as the vice pres of the united states. Then alternately called Mr. Gore. One seemed inappropriate the other disrespectful so they both bothered me.

I had a teacher tell us that once you are President, you can always be referred by Mr. President.....I don't know about VP, but I would guess the same would be true.

I would assume that whatever is appropriate for pres. is also for vp. If it's considered acceptable then I have no gripe. I know it's ok to also use Mr. ____ but that bothered me as well. It would be different if it was in private or a small gathering. Not in a large public forum.

I heard that last night, too. I've always understood the title "President" was forever, but never knew that about "Vice-Pres." either.

the media refers to virtually all former high level government including state officials and military officers by their title of office.
Colin Powell is the one that trips up the media the most....

I don't have a problem with Gore being referred to as "Mr. President" - he earned it.

I thought Ellen's best line was when she was said something along the lines of "Jennifer Hudson was a finalist on American Idol, but didn't win because America didn't vote for her. Al Gore is here too. America did vote for him..."
