Sanibel & Captiva

Post by OPHarbor »

We're thinking about an anniversary trip to Sanibel/Captiva Islands. Any advise? Places to stay, eat, party? Our anniversary is in May and it seems like a good time to go. Figure it's time to explore our own state besides the Keys and the rat.

Randy Wayne White owns a great restaurant there called Doc Ford's. Don't miss it.
Some will go and some will stay. It doesn't matter anyway ......

Grab a water taxi/shuttle and go out to Cabbage Key, one of my favorite waterside hangouts. I sail and overnight on the hook in that area quite a bit. Also Cayo Costa State Park Island is nearby, nothing around, just walking and quiet beaches if you like that kind of thing. On Sanibel, the Lazy Flamigo is another good spot for a bite.

Almost forgot, IF you get off the island driving around and go over to see Ft Myers beach, first off pack a lunch, the traffic sucks :o THEN just before you go over the bridge to FM beach turn off to the right slightly and go under the bridge, there you will see Bonita Bill's on the waterfront, great dive bar :pirate:

"Party" on Sanibel/Captiva is a bit different than the rest of FL. The whole idea with SanCap is that it is old-school FL, and laid back. The best "party" is probably the sunset celebration at the Mucky Duck (Andy Rosse Lane in Captiva). Nightlife on the islands is rather limited.

Have stayed at Casa Ybel and South Seas Plantation, but both pre-storm. Not sure what they are like now (although still probably pricey). When we have gone the past couple of times, we stayed at the Best Western right before the bridge. There's also another place right before the bridge...something suites....

Highly recommend Doc Ford's. Be nice to the bartender and ask for a sampler. Great selection of rum and the food is pretty good.

If you are into wildlife, Ding Darling Reserve is cool.

Food: Bubble Room is an experience...deserts are huge...like 1/4 of a cake is a "slice". Lazy Flamingo is OK.

We agree on the Bubble Room and Cabbage Key, plenty of dolphins around there too, Also on J. Ding Darlling NWR. Depending on the time of year, find starfish on the sandbars with your toes and pick 'em up to look at them... nine arms. Pods of baby rays in the shallows, dolphins at your shoulder. Do your shelling with a flashlight at night, you will get more shells. Also visit the Shell Museum. You would wish they were jewelry, they are so beautiful, our 27 year old is there this weekend. Early am on bikes is the way to tour. Have fun!

Ditto on cabbage Key and Cayo Costa. While youre at it go to Boca Grande, thats where Buffett filmed Hoot. Ft. Myers beach is a tourist trap, crazy busy. The beach isnt even that nice. If you must... go to The Bridge Restaurant on Sunday's great raggae party. The bubble Room restaurant on Captiva is a must

McT's Shrimp House is pretty good, had a good atmosphere...We're going in August for our anniversary ourselves, Staying at the Blue Dolphin Cottages on Sanblel-really small and cozy, has only 9 rooms!

Totally agree about most of Ft Myers Beach - very crowded and the water and the beach are pretty marginal for the most part. The Bubble Room is something to be seen, and we had great drinks at the Green Flash.
