Servebeer troubles
I keep having problems with the ftp servebeer site. For a while I wasn't able to logon, finally started working again, now I can't access it again. Maybe a computer guru can help. In Internet Explorer 7 (the newest version) when you got to the site, you have to go to the toolbar, click page, then open FTP in Explorer. It would then take you to the sign in. Now it gives a message that goes something like this......the folder "servebeer" is read-only because the proxy server is not set up to allow full access.....does that mean the site is messed up or do I need to configure a setting that has been somehow changed. I have made several changes to my pc lately....most notably going wireless, updating IE and Adobe. Am also having trouble with a PBSkids site that Flash Player will not work on when it used to work fine. I have scanned for virus' a few times with a few different programs and came up with nothing. I have also tried restore points but it says nothing has changed. Just wandered if anyone else was having trouble getting on or if it was just me and if it's me, how I can fix it. Thanks alot!

I upgraded to IE7 a couple of months ago and found that I couldn't download anything from the site. I went back to IE6 and my problems went away. Last weekend I upgraded to Vista and (unfortunately) got IE7 again. Now I can't even get into the site. I'm gonna try Fireox this weekend. sph

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but sometimes they have really good ideas....

In lay-person's terms this means that the server is turned off.

Right now the problems appear to be with the servebeer.com servers and are not related to your browsers. But even when the server problems are fixed, those of you who insist on using a browser as your FTP client, you will still have problems if you've recently upgraded from IE6 to IE7. My recommendation is to use a separate FTP client application, e.g. CuteFTP, rather than your browser (and that includes Firefox).
But ...... although IE7 isn't as "FTP friendly" as IE6 was, if you are trying to use FTP in IE 7, try the following procedure:
1. Open IE 7
Enter an FTP user name, password, and site in the URL bar using the following pattern:
"ftp://<username>:<password>@<site.tld>"
So using the username of jimmy, and a password of buffett, and your site is jimmybuffett.servebeer.com, you would use the following URL:
ftp://jimmy:buffett@jimmybuffett.servebeer.com
2. IE will display a directory listing of the FTP site.
3. Click the Page menu (hint: it's on the right hand side, under the search bar)
4. Select Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.
5. Windows explorer opens in a new window. Windows can't remember that we've already given the username and password, so we have to do it again.
6. Click the File menu and select Login As….
7. Enter your user name (jimmy) and password (buffett), and click the Log On button.
For the userID/pwd above, this will take you to the directory. No, it isn't as smooth as IE 6, but it is doable!
