The husband and I are going in May. North Palmetto Point. Any thoughts on what to expect? We're ready for a quiet trip.........staying on the atlantic side, snorkeling during the day and drankin' rum at night............

My Eleuthera/Hatchet Bay experience says either drink bottled beer or have your rum with no ice
Abandoned airplanes littered the grass beside the runway at the little airport, there were multiple articles of clothing made from the same fabric on a clothesline, different fabric at each house. And more than once, I saw a man walking on the road with a machete in one hand and carrying a stalk of bananas over a shoulder with the other.
It was incredible
Of course this WAS in 1985 .........................

Funny...same here from a surf trip in the early 80's...pineapple rum, blond backs, fresh baked bread, chickens and pigs being sold on the front porch of houses, fresh pineapples...and nice locals....heard it is still kind of laid back..guess I need to go back!!!

You will enjoy it, just a place to kick back in paradise and enjoy the simplicity. I agree with you all, not much has changed, I was there last year, up at the north end. As a matter of fact it seems things are even quieter up there if you can believe it. Flew into ELH, I didn’t knock around, I just bee-lined it over to Harbour Island, which is one of my FAVORITE places to get away and regenerate. If you feel like exploring, the Glass Bridge is pretty cool if you’ve never seen it, but a drive, and of course Harbour Island, I guarantee you WILL like that. Enjoy, I love it there, not too many people, and no friggin obnoxious monster resorts lining the beaches.

Re: Eleuthera Bahamas
I stayed there a year or so ago. Seeing how this is an old post I hope you enjoyed it there. If you were looking to get away from it all then you went to the right place. Friendly people. Beaches to die for. You must be staying at the same place as I did or close. My directions were turn right at the banyan tree.JanelovesJimmy wrote:The husband and I are going in May. Dated post but I know the island well and can provide some good tips. Usually go there on surf trips a few times a year not to mention my honney moon (a week in ELH and one in Harbour Island
Tippy's Governors Harbour, Best restaurant in the country. Great snorkling out front also.
Lighthouse beach. Best beach I have ever seen. The first time I went my wife and I found over 200 sand dollars (we left most there). the caves on the beach make perfect picknick spots.
Gregory Town. Surfer Pete is a riot, great guy and friend. worth stopping by to have a beer with. Monica has a bakery in town that is worth stopping at.
Surfers Beach. Not the best break on the island but deff. the most popular. Breaks best on NE swell and light SW wind, usually winter of course.
Harbour Island. Beautiful town. Seen buffett there a few times, he usually stops at Gusty's and plays a few. Not to mention Ma'Ruby's is on his top 10 burger spots.
Hope you had or have a great trip!
