. .I know it feels right to say it that way . . but . .is that for every response . . ? ?
I got MORE confused trying to look it up.....looked to me like either is correct and "I wish I were" is the more formal usage and "I wish I was" is the more informal usage......
OF COURSE, there are a million other websites that say something a little different.....

"Don't try to shake it, just nod your head
Breathe in, breathe out, move on"
Let's see if I can remember my Spanish verb tense stuff to explain this....
"I wish I were..."
The proper form of "to be" in that instance is "were". Another example is "If I were..." vs. "If I was..." "Was" is regular past tense whereas "were" is the conditional tense...an expression of something that is not a certanity.
I hope that makes sense....
Note: The above opinion is expressed by a non-grammar teacher...notice how I had to resort to my Spanish learning to try and explain it....

Made perfect sense to me. Hard to believe, I know, but...............I completely understood that. Couldn't have said it, but I understood it
OOH ! OOH ! I got one: people who type then when they mean than, or vicey-versa !!! UH !
They say, "I'd rather have apples then peaches." Drives me absolutely up the wall.
It's: "I'd rather have apples THAN peaches because I don't like peaches."
and "I'd like to have apples THEN peaches because I like peaches after apples." UH
