My thinking is this: Jimmy has never set him up as and "anti-establishment" type guy. From early 60's to punk groups to grunge to some current groups there have been many that view commercialism as "selling out". JB is not in that group so if he can make the money, good for him. If you dont like it, dont buy it, that simple. It would be different to me if he sold his music to be commercial like a car commercial or fast food.
When they make a "Pearl Jam Strawberry Jam" then I will worry

I don't buy any of that stuff. I don't even drink his tequila and although I've visited the Margaritavilles in Vegas, Orlando, Key West and New Orleans I don't return to them (except the New Orleans one for the bloody marys). But in Key West there are plenty of cooler bars to hit and better places to eat at. And besides TTWWY, it's been since Baromter Soup since I've actually enjoyed the whole c.d.

But I still go to the shows and listen o RM and listen to all the old stuff that I love. So again, who cares if he's commercial.
I think u hit it on the head with your comment oyster..i hate to say it but i think that the rookie parrotheads phlock to the margaritaville mumbo jumbo..buying sombraros with salt shaker attached very corny..the true phan builds his or her own costume or regalia. but heck he found a demand and he is filling it.

It's much the same lament that a lot of bikers have about harley-davidson....that the 'brand' has sold out...maybe, maybe not....it is all about finding a way to create longevity and MONEY....
You insert yourself where ever you want on the continuum....the obsessed, die-hard fan that wants it all......the casual listener who could give a rat's ass less about any of it.....and anywhere in between....

I have a few m'ville t-shirts, just like I have a few (okay, more than a few) harley t-shirts....they are reminders of a trip, of a time, of an experience.....sometimes I just wear them....sometimes, when I put them on I remember that great day in Orlando, in Vegas, or that a friend thought of me while in NOLA(the m'ville shirts)...or Sturgis, Yellowstone, Boston...where ever for the harley ones....

Does it get carried away......in MY opinion.....yes....but obviously that stuff isn't on the shelf for me....but it's there for somebody and who am Ito say that's wrong............?

Why must pholks stereotype?

I don't consider myself a rookie parrothead, but there's lotsa stuff I like to buy from Margaritaville.

I guess I am a true phan though, because I build my own costumes, and they're generally pleasing to all I meet. (And have won me many cool things.) However, there's sometimes Margaritaville things on them.

I'm glad Jimmy markets himself so well... it's one way for fans to identify other fans. I've struck up conversations with complete strangers just because I notice their t-shirt or flip-flops, and it almost always puts smiles on both of our faces. Sharing the love is a good thing! :D

And might I add the flip-flops are comfy and durable. My girlfriend even bought a pair.

I go to see Jimmy to have a great time. I usally budget $$$$ to go to his shows. If you look at the money side of anything, you would not have kids, you would never go anywhere. Nobody gets out of life alive, so enjoy it while you can.

cdudley wrote:I hate to be negative. I am as big a supporter of Buffett as anyone, and am very appreciative of all his hard work that has brought me great pleasure. But I was just on the margaritaville site to check out some info and can't believe how commercial the site and brand has become. I had not been on the site for a few years but can't believe that there is a margaritaville everything that I can think of. Shrimp, flip flops, tequila, beer, chairs, hats, recipes, shirts, key chains, you name it. I feel that these products and sense of commercialism goes against everything I love about Jimmy Buffett and the escapism and adventure he provides. Jimmy's writing has sent me all over the world to appreciate rare cultures and places. These experiences are invaluable and I consider his creativity and music one of my main influences to do so. One thing I have learned to love in my adventures (inspired by Jimmy himself) is that the further off the beaten path you go, the more exciting, unique, and wonderful it gets. These commercialized and shrink rapped packaged items only help to dilute that experience. I would assume Jimmy feels the same.
