OK, so I got dragged along on a shopping trip with DKD today. It is very rare that this happens ( me shopping ) However, I have not gotten the opportunity to spend much time with my lovely bride lately so I take the opportunities as they arrise.

Like any guy in a shopping environment I navigate towards the electronics dept. Up untill today I had never given any thought to Plasma or LCD. To me it was just another thing you do not need that you could dump alot of money on. I mean how much better could it REALLY be.

Well I spent some time investigating and watching the plasmas and LCD's today and was amazed. There really is a difference between that and the TV I have at home. Not to mention it looks a HELLVA lot easier to move.

SO here is the quesion. Plasma or LCD? I am sold on one of them. I just do not know which one yet.

Here is what I gathered from my own observations today. Plasma has a much clearer picture. To me LCD looked like an enlarged version of my cell phone screen.

This is an unfair observation though. On the Plasmas they were showing a movie. On the LCD's they had a video game playing. So in all fairness the pixelations and lesser quality I noticed on the LCD could have been the results of a video game.

Oh brings up another question. Will I be able to use all my current DVD players, game counsils, etc or do Plasma and LCD have different hookups. I know I could probly look that up on my own, but I am feeling lazy.

Sound is very important to me as well. Take for instance if I am watching Star Wars. I want it to SOUND like there is an Imperial Cruiser landing on my roof.

One concern I have though is , Does that thing REALLY hang on the wall? I would be so afraid of being woke up in the middle of the night by a loud crash as my new TV falls off the wall.

I really want to hear both sides of this battle so I can get the most bang for my buck. What I would use it most for is watching sports and playing games. All though if I had a big one like the one I saw today that I almost considered purchasing on the spot I would probly watch alot more movies at home as well. The only reason I did not buy was I wanted to come home and seek "professional " advice. ...... That would be from this forum if you can believe it I can see myelf justifying up to 2K ( not including price of suround sound set up ) So let the battle begin....Plasma or LCD?

Don't rule out DLP. I've got a buddy that has one, and it is the clearest picture I've seen!

If you want great sound then the TV choice doesn't matter

It will stay on the wall if hung properly.

Both have their pros and cons. LCD has a great picture but is limited in size (42" or so). Plasma has the size advantage.

I would suggest looking into the projection DLP as well. Not to complicate things, but once the Plasma or LCD reaches the end of its lifespan, its over. Buy a new one. DLP is a $250 part that is easily replaced and the rest of the unit is fine.

Check out bestbuy.com. If you click on televisions, at the top there is a spot that compares each TV and its good points. Its a decision only you can make.

BTW... I just bought a $2000 61" DLP Projection TV. I haven't seen it yet, but BFP says that the HD broadcasts on it are spectacular.

I've recently purchased a Panasonic 50" rear-projection LCD with high-definition and,
though the view-angle range is not the widest,
the picture and color depth is AWESOME!!!

We purchased a Sony Wega 42 DLP......LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! Had it 2 months.
Be careful about size. Many think the bigger the better. Neighbours have the 47 and it is way too big for the room (it is a good size) it is in. Our room is about 15X18 and I would not go any bigger. IMHO.

Check out the DLP it's fantastic!!!!!! Like Lefty said we just bought a 61" and it is awesome.

Me??? Unless you just HAVE to have it.. I would wait..
the TV race is just now heating up..
and the cost (and Quality) is going to get better..


Most Networks don't have enough content in Hd to make it worth the while..

Just bought a 42 LCD and the picture is amazing. I looked at plasma also but the best buy guy told me that the only problem with plasma was that if they break they are VERY expensive to have fixed! Both are good choices though

Prices will be dropping... as we get closer to 2009 then they will be super cheap.

Consider how far away you are sitting from the TV.

TV won't matter if sound is important... Then you're talking surround sound. I would go with at least a 7.1 surround receiver....
(sub, center, fronts, mids, rears) It will blow you away...

I have several buddies that spend all their free time on the electronic discussion boards and hit Vegas annualy for the CES.
They all have 61" DLPs.
That was all I needed to know!!!

Nothing experimental about DLP technology.
It's just the cheapest way to get really big screens.
Too bulky to hang on a wall, there is no WOW factor as in LCD or Plasma.
Just alot of size for the buck, and cheaper to rejuvinate as it ages (bulb replacement only)

I didn't buy a big screen for the purpose of sitting FARTHER from the TV

Mother would not approve

right, I was more making the comment on the
Pholks on the Electronics boards..
I talk to them on a daily basis and (most of them)
want to have the new stuff before the stores do
they do not understand that the bugs are needing to be worked
out.. and they help the manufactures find the weak spots..

The 61 " DLP we bought was for my 85 year old father's bedroom!!!!!
He likes to watch foreign films and was having trouble reading the sub-titles on his normal size screen .
Little did he know he would end up hosting viewing parties for his fellow seniors in the neighborhood! They were all raised without T.V., now they are watching HD on a 61 incher in a bedroom!

LCD is better than plasma if it is near a window or gets a lot of glare. Definitely pros and cons for each kind and it might be worth waiting a bit more because prices continue to drop. I can't believe how much cheaper they are now from when my folks go theirs back in Oct/Nov.

The Samsung 61" DLP has an amazing picture!

I LOVE my LCD. Hockey in HD, and even p*** is Frickin Great.

The only problem I've read concerning LCD is that over time the gases that create the great picture will dissipate over time and the picture becomes dull, and the gas cannot be replaced.
