Cabo or the Keys?
I'm trying to figure this summer's vacation in celebration of the Big 4-0.
We're between a Keys road trip (a few nights each in Key West and Key Largo) or heading out to Cabo san Lucas.
I've been to the Keys once, and never to Mexico.
Which would you choose?

Thanks for all the feedback!
It was very much a Mexican runaway until a late surge by the Keys.
I'm still leaning towards Cabo (is that in preparation for the Cabo Wobble??), but the decision is still a few weeks away.
As for East Mex, I'm not really interested in the "touristy" places (that's why we're bypassing a lot of the Caribbean resorts), I assume Cancun is similar to those?

You would probably have to fly into Cancun (just because that's the biggest airport in the area), but there are many, many places along the Maya Rivera that are isolated, or smaller developments.ConchRepublican wrote:As for East Mex, I'm not really interested in the "touristy" places (that's why we're bypassing a lot of the Caribbean resorts), I assume Cancun is similar to those?
Transportation is not a problem from the Cancun airport to anywhere along the coast.

Hubby and I have talked about staying in a rental house in Akumal the next time we go.
Here are the VRBO listings:

I really like the eco-hotel where sonofabeach stayed though. Looks like an awesome, low-key time.

I now know why you like it so much.
We never did go to Playa Del Carmen other than passing through but we did go to Akumal. I intended to snorkel there but it was somewhat rainy that day so we just shopped and ate lunch at a great restraurant/bar called La Buena Vida. Also went to the caves of Aktun Chen there the next day and had a great time.

my wife and I honeymooned in Cabo and loved it. We stayed at the Dreams resort- all inclusive, good food, great bar- and it was a quick bus ride into town if we wanted to go bar hopping or a quick ride the other way to the other town that was less touristy- but most days we just partied out by the pool and in the hotel loby open-air bar. Would also recomend the booze cruise, as well as taking ATV's into the desert
Good times and riches and son of a bitches, I've seen more than I can recall

Been to Mexico twice this year. Rented a house both times.
Just above Tulum on a quiet stretch of beach and then Cabo.
BUT it was not Cabo proper. Have been nine times to the Baja and never stayed right in Cabo. If you want quiet and not tourists get a place out the East Cape, it is wonderful but you need a jeep. Never had any problems with safety. The trip this year the house was one of seven and that was it. Slept with the door open. Of course the two sides are very different in vegetation and the Baja is not as expensive.
Yes, i lived in Florida so i know and love the Keys but Mexico is a tropical change.

Well, we finally decided to stick with the Keys, mostly because of cost. We really like the Keys, well at least we think we do, but we've only been there once. The flights alone to Mexico seemd excessive, and considering other projects set for this summer (new burner and kitchen) it just didn't make sense since we think so highly of the Keys.
This time we're taking 6 days, flying into Ft. Lauderdale and driving down (drop top already rented). First stop is Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road, then straight down for 3 days on Cayo Hueso, staying at the Eden House. Day 4 we drive back up to Key Largo (stopping to look for the No Name Pub along the way) for a more relaxing finish to the trip at the Bayside Resort.
Key West I expect to be a bit more busy (bar hopping and sightseeing) whereas Largo will be more laid back with dolphin swims, kayaking and a lost afternoon/evening at the Caribbean Club.
Thanks to everyone for all their feedback!
27 days and counting, I can't wait!
