Pet Food Recall

Post by nutmeg »

Both cat and dog foods are being recalled.

Following is announcement

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

That is a LOT of pet food being recalled. Note...17 of the top 20 retailers and contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Please check before feeding any of your fur babies canned or foil pouched food!

Rat Poison Cited In Pet Food Recall
Wheat From China Contaminated, Lab Says

A spokeswoman for the New York state Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday that rodent poison was found in tainted pet food that killed several animals and sparked a nationwide recall.

It is believed that the chemical aminopterin was on wheat imported from China, ABC News reported.

Various online medical sources indicate that aminopterin is also used in trials to treat leukemia.

sorry
I got an email and thought it needed to be known.

We have some wet cat food and I'm going to throw it away.
It isn't on the list, but I don't want to take any chances.

Fortunately, I don't feed my cats any of the brands involved in the recall.

This is soooo tragic.

I don't know enough about the farming process to know the standard practices for keeping rodents from eating the crops, but apparently it is done successfully without causing a health risk on a regular basis.

Either the product used on the wheat was uncommon or the wheat was improperly sterilized/treated during processing to clense it of pesticides.
Some people never find it, some only pretend
But me, I just want to live happily ever after every now and then.

There's not much that we pet owners can do. Pets are property, so You won't get anything of $$$$$ value for your beloved pets. Probly just a "I'm sooooooooooo sorry"

I heard on the news this morning there's a class action lawsuit being considered in Washington State regarding this. Sometimes all it takes is just one case to change the laws.
