Sweeping generalizations tend to tick people off, as we can see, because they imply everyone based on the actions of few.

Sooooo... let's try to focus on specific instances, and not drag entire groups of people through the wringer.

Thank you.

In my 46 years of life I have had the pleasure of knowing a number of LEOs, some are great people and some aren't so great but when push comes to shove, I'd much rather have them around then not.

I've known of some who have bent the law when it came to their fellow officers violating various traffic laws (including one DUI), I've known a few who got roasted for not turning a blind eye or for being overly zealous about enforcing certain laws. And I've known a bunch who have NO, ZERO sense of humor while on the job who are really funny off duty.

All in all, they have a tough job and while I do believe that they shouldn't violate the law while in uniform or on duty, I also believe that sometimes they should be entitled to us looking the other way as they go their merry way.

I believe that there are no more "bad" cops than there are bad in every profession.
If the officer gave moeron a ticket for not wearing a belt when he indeed was wearing a belt HE WAS A BAD COP!!!!!!!!!
Whether or not Moe p*** him off is irrelevent.
Wearing a belt? Ticketed for not wearing one? Internal investigation warrented.

"Department policy is that officers wear seatbelts, and it's common practice, due to the gun belts they wear, that they unleash their seat belt before they arrive," said Oates.

According to state law, police officers are exempt from seatbelt laws.
The exemption never occurred to me until I started reading this thread. I think the policy quoted above makes sense, wear the belt as long as you can.

The situation was a good oportunity for the officer to educate Moeron if he chose to do so.
It was also O.K. for the officer to ignore him.
It was not O.K. for the policeman to falsly cite moe for a seatbelt violation while he was obviously wearing one.
If I yelled a ridiculous accusation at an officer such as "you're a murderer", should he be able to cite me for murder? No way! Maybe mentaly disturbed, disturbing the peace, crazy, whacko, or who knows what, but not murder!!!!!!!!

Here's an example of what can happen to an officer of the law if that person is not wearing his or her seatbelt... (there's still some speculation on whether or not he was wearing one, but it's not that no he wasn't)

Moeron was wearing a seatbelt. Cop was not. Cop got called on it. Cop issued M a citation for not wearing.

He started swearing at me yelling " I only enforce the law, I don't have to follow it" With that he pulls me over giving me a ticket for not having one. I always use my seatbelt. After he gave me my ticket, he says to me "next time don't p*** me off" When I go to court the Cop will tell the judge that I was the one who had broken the law. I guess that he could have beat me up like that other Chgo Cop did to that Bartender. When I go to Court the Judge will belive him and not me just because he is a Cop. I just wanted to vent. I don't feel any calmer tho.

got it...thanks

That stinks..its so subjective. Its worth a shot to submit the whole story to the court...

I of course would just pay the ticket and learn my lesson not to provoke a cop...and report it to his supervisor instead. But thats just me.

O.K....first of all and this is from personal experience. I had worked in the Police Dept. for over 8yrs. We used to get complaints about officers daily...some legit ..some not.

You need to first COPY THE CITATION and keep it for your records.
Call his Shift Commander and if you get no response contact the Lt. or Capt.
Explain without getting p*** off what happened. Tell them that you questioned the officer's reason for not wearing his seatbelt. I know here in NJ you have to be pulled over for something other than a seatbelt violation to be issued a ticket for it. Too many rumors to the contrary.
If you then get nowhere, you need to either contact the department's Internal Affairs Officer or the Prosecutor that will handle all the cases on that court date and request a preliminary arbitration.

GOOD LUCK, BUT STAY CALM...Nothing p*** off a cop more than someone proving them wrong....it's all in the EGO !

Although the officer wrote moe up for a crime he was not guilty of, as Elrod pointed out, he was lucky that he wasn't written up for anything worse than that .
I don't like the idea of an officer making something up, but thinking back I also was the beneficiary of a similar action!
I was driving home from work at 8:00 pm on a beautiful summer eve , top down, and less than 2 miles from home I was pulled over for speeding. My commute is 50 miles each way, and I had my trusty radar detector prominantly displayed on my windshield.
Back in those days I wore a tie, and when I could only produce an expired proof of insurance certificate, the cop said: " You don't look like the kind of guy that would drive without insurance, but you were speeding and got caught because I paced you first and THEN fired my instant on radar gun at you. I'm sure you were just excited about getting home on this nice evening after a long day at work, so I'll tell you what I'm gonna do: I'll write you up for a seatbelt violation, even though you are wearing one. There's no points, and it's the cheapest fine we have"
I't was tough for me, because I am a real advocate of belt wearing, and in checking with my attorney, who sought counsil with a criminal attorney, I was advised to jump at that "on the spot plea bargain"
The criminal lawyer was impressed with the officer's prowess at coming up with the plea bargain, and said that he apparently had a good plan to write alot of tickets that produced revenue for the city without any legal or court time to off set it.
It was a win-win, even though it was all nonsense. That's how it works I guess in real life all the time.
Elrod said Moeron was lucky, possibly he was!!!!

I got my court date. June 7th. I talked to my phriend who is a Chgo Cop. He says to go and the other cop might not show up. I can contest the ticket. If the Cop is late they will dismiss the ticket. Thats what I am hoping for. I'll keep you pholks on where this is going. Thanks Ron aka moeron.

You never know, the judge may be a real stickler for seat belt use, and scold the cop for not just setting a bad although perfectly legal example, but also for putting the city at a greater risk of liability should he become involved in a crash.
Good luck Moe(Ron)
