Let's see, the new Boston Garden was first called the Shawmut Center and when Shawmut Bank was bought out, the name was changed to the FleetCenter and when Fleet was bought out, the naming rights was sold to TDBankNorth and renamed the center, the TDBankNorth Garden.

We still have Joe Louis arena for the Red Wings to play in, and it is refered to simply as "The Joe". I wonder how long that will last.
Meanwhile, Comerica Bank has just announced plans to relocate in Dallas.
We are stuck for ten years with Comerica Park being the name for the venue for all the Tiger's home games.
The name "The Palace" was laughed at when first proposed for the brand new building designed for hosting the Pistons, but at least it's just a name.
Same guy owns it that owns Pine Knob Music Theatre (DTE now), so who knows-maybe it will be called Detroit public water works park next!!!

The New York Mets plan to call their new stadium "Citi Park" when it opens in 2009, instead of Ebbets Field II or Shea Stadium II.

let's see, the Cardinals spend 20 years trying to get out of Arizona State University stadium since a "college" field isn't suitable for a pro team. soooo.... what's the 155 million dollar name of their new pro stadium?
University of Phoenix Stadium
which by the way is located in Glendale AZ...
and is right next to the Coyote's Jobing.com Arena
take your pick for boob arena names.

I prefer the original name, Enron Field.
How'd that work out for them?
I don't know why, but the whole corporate naming rights thing bugs me to no end. Here in Michigan when the Tigers' new stadium opened, tv sportscasters referred to it as the CoPa. After a few weeks I rarely heard it anymore. Here's how I think it went down -- the bank told the team we're paying you millions of $$ for naming rights, you'd better make sure our name gets used. The team then put the squeeze on sportscasters, saying if you want access to interview our athletes, use the name they paid for.
Or am I a cynic?

I never thought of that but I'll bet you're right!
I had thought that sports fans were reminded of "At the Copa, Copa Cabana" and thought it was the lamest stadium nick-name ever!

Lincoln Financial Field aka The Linc (Home of the EAGLES)
Citizen Bank Park aka The Bank (Home of the Phillies)
and what is now The Wachovia Center (Home of the Flyers) use to be First Union Center, I still lovingly refer to it as the

actually i'm waiting for the major broadcast networks to demand payment to use the corporate sponsor name in their telecasts, or sell their own naming rights for use during telecasts.

San Diego parks are among the lamest of corporate names...
San Diego Stadium -- now Qualcomm Stadium (cell-phone B.S.)
San Diego Sports Arena -- now iPayOne Center (mortgage shylocks)
Petco Park -- soon to be the Litter Box (if the Padres don't keep winning)
