more employee dilemma **sigh**

Post by PHAW Webmistress »

How do you tactfully and most importantly "legally" tell an employee she can't come into work everyday with a hangover and that her choice of clothing leaves something to be desired?

Can you tell I'm a little gun shy :-?

Also - before you ask, no, we do not have an employee policy manual **sigh**

If the position is a "public" face, i.e. receptionist or public-relations, of the company it is does not put forth a good image of the company to have someone that does not have the interest in how the company appears when interfacing the the general public.

Perhaps you could tactfully, instead of right out attacking the hangover/clothing issue (though i'm sure you're sorely tempted!), sit down with her and go over the expectations that you (i'm assuming you're her manager?) have for her position, such as workload, tasks, hours, expecting her to come to work at XYZ hour and be READY to work right then, not 2 hours and 6 cups of coffee and a nap later, and portray a certain image and decorum appropriate for the position (reiterate dress code).

Best thing to do I think is to go at it as though you're concerned that YOU haven't explained YOURSELF well, etc.....that doesn't come across as accusatory, then, and gives you opportunity to touch upon EXACTLY what you want from her. (though you'd think it would be OBVIOUS that you're not supposed to show up to work hungover all the time).

Though, I guess it depends a little on the employee......sometimes being subtle is completely wasted on certain people, i.e. flies right over their head and they go, huh?
Good luck with it! :)

Unless there is any codes in uniform she is breaking... Might be time for a new handbook with what you can and can not wear.

Hangover-- Do you know for sure she has a hangover? If it doesn't effect her work at all. Well.....

There is always the attitude, if you're going to play you gotta pay. If she doesn't come into work being professional after a night of drinking, you could fire her if it is causing a reputation decrease for the office. Of course, the warning process depends on your company policy.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd ask the big boss about the lack of a manual.

Can you create a dress code? It never hurts to have something in writing.

As far as the hangovers go, can you sit her next to an obnoxious morning person or something loud? It might not stop her, but it could be enough to make her quit.

Or have the people that complained about it leave AA brochures on her desk (or AAAAA- in case she's driving you to drink...)

You need to tell her that her apparent coming in hungover is not acceptable and no longer tolerated - if your company has more than 15 employees then Depending on your state you may have to offer her some kind of rehab - I'm not sure about that. If you have instances of where her hangover has caused her work to suffer, have those there to document.

Detail to her that her dress in not apporporate and tell her it must improved.

Have this all written down and both of you sign and date the day she is counseled - give her a copy and put one in her "personal" file.

Blame the higher ups.....

Find out where she goes drinking send some shallow male in to hit on her once she's passed her standards limit. Make sure this man shacks up with her and gives her a roaring good time. When she does not make it in at all because of her illicit drunken love affair you can terminate her for job abandonment. :)

It may be easier than writing a whole handbook tonight.

FYI I am in an HR type role. These people are actually cancers and you ned to begin talking with her and covering your posterior. Make your points direct her appearance is an easy one but proving she has a hangover is entirely different. If she comes in reeking of booze than you can move fast. It may make for a tough day but sending someone home who smells of alcohol is not wrong. Document document document.
The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

Oh, so she's just young and dumb. Point (or print) out the Cosmo article from a few months ago about too-provocative office attire. And maybe just letting her know that people notice that she's hungover will be enough to possibly give her pause. Remember, she's just 21, she may realize you know.
