That was definately Charleston...and he is massive.green1 wrote:Would the 25 foot tall black man in the straw hat standing in front of security be Charleston? He is massive.
The crowd was pretty mellow and pretty excited to be there. It was a perfect setting.
The LandSharks were flowing like crazy!!!

good observation. Anguilla was easily the most quiet and laid back crowd of Parrot Heads that I have ever been part of. It was sort of surreal.

I saw the show from 3 people back in the center. Unbelievable experience.
The reason we were so "mellow" is that it was 90 degrees, full sun facing the crowd and most up us had been standing in the sun from 10 am until the amazing show finished at 6:30 pm.
Except for maybe 100 VIPs who got to use Bankie's upper level to view the show, there was no shade at all and if you wanted to have a good spot you baked in the sun. But it was all so worth it!
Not your typical PH crowd. Not many people in the audience were all decked out in PH wear.
I was fortunate enough to meet Jimmy on Thursday. I was at the Cuisinart resort going to lunch with my fiancee when we saw guitars being unloaded from a van. There was Jimmy, just kind of directing the equipment guys. At a break in their work, I walked up and, feeling bad about bugging him plus being pretty star struck, just said
"Jimmy, THANK YOU for making this amazing show happen for us." He just smiled and shook my hand and said "No problem, brother. Thank you." I left without taking a picture because they were busy and I didn't want to bug him more than I already had.
Two days later Jimmy sat down for breakfast at the table right next to where we were seated at the resort next to the venue. I was able to listen to him plan his day with the tour manager. No one interrupted his breakfast.
At about 10 am, the restaurant started to get busy. A group of 4 very dressed up parrotheads were waiting for a table within 30 feet of where Jimmy was eating. I think his tour manager saw them 1st and I think because Charleston wasn't there and it was getting so busy, Jimmy and his tour manager made a quick exit. The dressed up parrotheads never even saw that he was right in front of them for 30 seconds before they sat down. The restaurant was buzzing as soon as Jimmy walked out as EVERYONE was so fired up for the show.
And what a show it was...To see Jimmy from 25 feet away in such a special setting was pure magic! 99% of the crowd had this really laid back, awesome vibe. Some people tried to push their way to the front row and there was essentially no security (other than Charleston). After we had been standing for literally 5 hours to keep our good spots, those who tried to cut in front were convinced to go back to their original spots.
Anguilla is astoundingly beautiful and the show (plus meeting Jimmy, even ever so briefly) was a dream come true!
Brilliant job, Jimmy!
Plus, those who got to see the impromptu "beach" concert on Friday...well, they really have some stories to tell! I wish I had seen that!

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

Completely awesome experience, I have to agree. And I agree that the crowd was pretty mellow because it was *hot*....

People were there for 5 hours? Really? We all walked in about 25 - 30 minutes before and had no problems. I didn't realize people got there so early. I was only on island for 2 full days so we got out on the water and fished and sailed a little before the show (well, we left at 4AM) - never even thought about standing there. Cool that you got a prime spot. I was about 50 yards - give or take.

It really wasn't all the expensive. I think the smart people - and I am not one of them - just planned thier vacation around Jimmy's show. I think the whole thing cost me about a grand (airfare, hotel, ticket to the show). I met people who planned to crash down there for a week to ten days and their package was about the same I paid for three and a half days. Renting the boat and gear for some scuba and fishing was costly but I hadn't been down there in over 5 years and I figured what the hell. Wish I planned better. Could still be there.Tiki Torches wrote:Even though these concerts are virtually impossible (and unaffordable) for everyone to get to, I hope does more of this type of thing in the future.

This is a great story - thanks for sharing! Years ago I worked in the concert industry and saw all kinds of wild fans swarm the stars. I witnessed that it could get pretty overwhelming for the performers. I really liked the way that you waited for the break, went up to do a brief hello and left him alone. I'm sure that he appreciates that more than you realize.Catch&Release wrote:I saw the show from 3 people back in the center. Unbelievable experience.
