it arrived today.. left on my front door..

OK, so I didn't have to go and pick it up but I live across

before the UPS Bozo was at the light

Jeez, I know. They do this to us all the time.

We live out in the country ... our property is fenced in, and sometimes they just throw it over the gate down by the road where anybody could pick it up ...

They all do this anymore unless you ask for it to be signed. I ordered an iPod for my daughter for Christmas, and it was sitting at the door when she came home from school. Ohhh....I had to do some fast talking to 'explain' that away!!

I don't like it when they just leave stuff in plain sight. It seems, though, like the USPS is the only service that does does that around here. I have had other companies (maybe UPS or fedex) leave stuff on my back deck in the off season. I happen to look out the door and...voila...there's my box I've been waiting for.....soaking wet!!!!! Knock, on wood, though, nothing has ever been stolen from the front step.

Fed Ex did that too me a couple years ago. The way our first floor is, we are about 6 feet underground. I ordered a neon sign off ebay and fed ex left a note on the door saying left it on your front porch. I opened the patio door and there it was in about 100 pieces all over the patio. It was written in giant black letters on the box FRAGILE GLASS BE CAREFUL WHEN HANDLING. I called Fed Ex and they told me tough, the guy who shipped it to me had insured it for 100 bucks and they told him it was his fault that it broke and they refused the claim. The only thing we both were able to do is call the BB on them. I to this day still hate Fed Ex.

I work with a guy who collects art and coins. He sold a set of coins to someone on ebay. He took the case with the coins to the UPS store. He told the clerk that he was shipping rare coins and wanted insurance. The clerk helped him package everything, address, fill out the paperwork and then collected the money.

A week later he gets an email from the purchaser asking where the coins are. He checks the tracking number and UPS indicates that the coins had been delivered and signed for. He sends purchaser the tracking number and the link and tells him, "they were delivered and signed for on this date and at this time." The purchaser says, "I never got them". Also no one was home at that time on that date so there isn't anyway that they were signed for.

At this time my co-worker calls UPS and asks, who signed for the package. He finally gets a name and it isn't that of the purchaser so he asks "where was the package delivered?" They rattled off an address, he wrote it down and sent it to the purchaser. The purchaser gets the name, looks it up in the phone book, calls the guy and asks when he will be around so he can pick up his coins. The guy claims not to know what is going on and never received any package from UPS.

Back to UPS they go, UPS says it's not their fault but there isn't anything they can do if they guy won't cough up the coins. They tell my coworker to file a claim since they lost his package. They fax over a form with a cover letter stating that UPS had lost the package and that UPS was responisble for either replacing or paying for the lost items at the rate that they were insured for.

He filled out the paper work and sent it back to UPS, who then proceeded to deny his claim because somewhere in their terms and conditions they won't ship valuables, including coins, art and other collectables.

He took them to small claims and beat them. The judge ruled in his favor because of several things, one the address that the coins were delivered to was not only a little ways away from the address that it was shipped, it was the next state over. Then there was the fact that it was shipped from the UPS store and that they employee indicated that shipping coins (and insuring them was okay). The judge felt that it was incumbent upon UPS to train their employees properly and not try to dodge responsibility by hiding behind a set of terms and conditions that make most phone books look skinny. The last major piece was the letter stating that UPS had lost the shipment and that UPS was responsible.

UPS took about a month to settle up and they offered to ship the check to my coworker who told them that was fine as long as they used FedEx!

Based on what I've seen this spring, they could always move back to RFK. The Nats sure won't be needing it. :(
