Okay, i read the posts, went back and forth lots between the choices and picked version

one. Dutchy has some good points but you said simple. So keeping that in mind i liked one. A 'jazzed' up version is a differnt thing and maybe what you want or not.
Let us know what you decide.

First logo definitely the best, I think the wave in the other logos is too large and/or thick, wave in first logo a good size to go with the printing

Here are all five side-by-side for comparison. Where and how will you be using your logo? Primarily on letterhead and/or a website heading? If so then a long and wide logo could work. None of the 5 logos convey the shape of propeller to me. They also seem to be very minimal in the use of color with the simple black text and blue logo, i.e. no shadow or 3D effect (see example I threw together at the bottom). Although when I read your requirements the simpler approach may be just what you are looking for.

As a graphics professional,
I like individual elements of certain pieces:
The smallcaps typestyle used in #1 and #2 is a good idea, but I'd like to see a serif in the font like that shown in a Newtext or Bank Gothic font to add some pep to it.
....and increase size by 25%. Your company's name should be no less prominent than your logomark.
I like the #1 logomark concept best, but would thumbnail up a few more takes on it.
Maybe reduce overall length. You want it to fill 1/3 of a business card.
It's a good start...

#1 has a nice flow to it. very even. until i saw #4, it was my favorite.
#3 has very clean lines.
#8 seems immature
#x is what i voted for. it just seems more pleasing to the eye. maybe because it's not perfectly symmetrical.
#y seems unbalanced. the curvature of the bottom blue strip and the top blue strip don't seem to go very well together.
i like the font kind of smallish and in all caps.
when i look at them side-by-side, i like #1 a lot still.

Why do I have this feeling that some tricky trickster is going to go play on Photoshop, and post you a picture of a check?

Surfpirate, what would it look like if the shape was rounded instead of pyramid-like? ('Cause I'm sure you have nothing better to do.

I like #1 best, but I do like the font and effect of Surfrider's print. It reminds me of the plane's shadow on the water.
#3 looks too stiff to me, doesn't have the spirit of flying.
#8, I like the graphic better than #1, but I like #1's font. Can you combine?
X reminds me of something sinking, in front of a hill.
Y makes me think of a mountain.

Rounded like the 2nd image below? I also liked what someone else here suggested .... something about
"nothing is more distinctive than the nose of a clipper plane". See the last image below with a sillouette of a clipper.
Years ago I designed a logo for a soccer team I coached by the name of Bell Atlantic Wave. That logo incorporated a cool effect blending the ocean waves up into matching wave-like cloud formations in the sky. Superimposing a clipper plane sillouette on that image would be nice too. I'll see if I can dig up that image from my archives.
