South Beach, Miami

Post by carolinagirl »

We're going there the third week of May, with a time share trade-out...

Any suggestions on what to do there? (I'm sure there's lots.) Never been!

Or where to stay . . . I have been through Miami hundreds of times but never stayed there. What is a good hotel on the beach?
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

My favorite hotel on Miami Beach is Loews. But it can be expensive. On Collins Ave., just a couple of blocks from Ocean Ave. Right on the beach and a great pool area as well.

We're staying at a time share resort on Ocean Ave. Just don't know what to do until we get there, I guess. Do they allow skateboarding? I think I've seen on TV people rollerblading, so I'm wondering. I know there's lots of good music and clubs. Anything in particular we shouldn't miss???

I wold suggest taking a drive into the Everglades. Shark Valley is cool. Don't know if the gators are still out, but should still be fun. http://www.southalley.com/sharkvalley.html

On the beach...South Beach is South Beach. To me it's the same all over. One place isn't much different from the next. If you wanna get away from some of the South Beach stuff, drive up to Hollywood Beach. I like it up there. More relaxed and low-key.

Forgot to also add, my favorite bar near South Beach is north a ways on 68th(I think) and Collins, called the SandBar. Free pool on Wed. and two dollar drafts during happy hour.

Two dollar drafts don't sound that great, but after ten dollar beers in South Beach it's a bargain.

Thanks, Oysters&beer!!! Actually, free pool sounds good too, because our resort doesn't even have one.

Not a swimming pool. I meant pool tables. There is no way you will find a free swimming pool in Miami. However, if you do wanna visit one and are up for paying for it a really cool one is the Venetian Pool. http://www.venetianpool.com/

Coral Gables is a neat place to visit as well.

There's a long, wide paved walk going north from Ocean Ave., that runs between the beach and the hotels, until it becomes a boardwalk several blocks up. I've seen people biking, rollerskating, jogging, etc., so I don't know why you couldn't skateboard.

Well that Venetian Pool looks very inviting, especially because of its historic and architectural significance... very cool! 8) Thx!

Back from South Beach... fun vacation, but doesn't hold a candle to Key West. Weather was great, just a little rain from tropical storm Barry, but they needed it. Did the Duck Tour. Best Buffettesque place to eat is CJ's Crab Shack, right on Ocean Drive, in the either Century or Colony building. They alternate Buffett and Marley tunes all day and night.

We stayed in the Hilton Grand Vacation Resort, housed in the old McAlpin bldg. Went in to Seaquarium, but never made it to the Everglades or Venetian Pool. Son enjoyed LOTS of skateboarding, which is allowed everywhere. One waiter told us to take the bus north to Nautilus Middle School for great skateboarding, so we did that.

We now understand the South Beach diet. Everyone is so skinny because you have to walk everywhere and the food is too expensive. Average dinner for three: $70. Breakfast or appetizers with drinks:$30. Gratuity up to 19% added to every meal, plus tax after gratuity!
