My first job was in a old fashioned general store / beach wear / deli store on Indian Rocks Beach that had a old fashioned soda fountain.... learned to make all these weird drinks plus... the fountain cherry cokes, vanilla cokes, root beer floats, sasperilla and the like.... never aquired a taste for anything more on the edge than a chocolate shake.....

yeah, aren't they...there used to be an Orange Julius at a mall in Tulsa....Orange Julius/Dairy Queen combined..
first time I actually learned that it involved milk and orange juice.
there was a drug store in West Tulsa, too..gosh I was a kid..and you could get what I think was called a phosphate? flavors, I believe.
hmmm, I could be wrong about it being a phosphate though..carbonated anyway and you could only get it from a fountain...

If you saw the movie, The Outsiders, book by S. E. Hinton, you'll know the type drug store I'm talking about...
that was filmed in West Tulsa, East side of the Arkansas River, and Brookside... where I used to hang out, but it after the time period the film took place...
been to all the places many times featured in that film...Hinton graduated from Tulsa Central...along with Gary Busey, Mary Kay Place, Leon Russell..etc...

no
the root beer was mixed with milk for a black cow
and
the grape juice was mixed with milk for a purple cow..
two different drinks..
Wylers made presweetened powdered Grape flavor
and Root Beer Flavor that mixed well with milk..

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But if I see one anyhow
I'd rather see than be one.
