Don Ho, Hawaiian Musician, Dies at 76
Hawaiian singer Don Ho died on Saturday of heart failure. Don Ho did an introduction for Jimmy on the "Live in Hawaii" album.
From the New York Times: Mr. Ho had achieved nationwide fame with several successful albums and a hit single, “Tiny Bubbles.” A full decade before Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” the song painted an appealing portrait of tropical indulgence that cemented Mr. Ho’s character as an easygoing romantic rogue.

Don Ho was one of my personal favorites, second only to the late Alfred Apaka. I got into Hawaiian music through my dad who was a Navy man and pro musician for a time. Of all the obits I've read today about Don, not one mentioned his other big hit ''Pearly Shells''. One other note to share, on a cassette tape I had of Don Ho, there was a very unique version of the Hawaiian Wedding Song. My then fiance and I loved that tune so much, that it inspired us to have it sung at our wedding as our song. (25 years ago) A friend back then, jazz singer Nancy Gee sang it for us much like Don's version.

Sail on, Don Ho
Got to see him in Honolulu back in '80 at the Hilton Hawaiian.
Back then, I was, like.."whatever"... typical teenager reaction
I learned to appreciate that experience more and more with the years (am I old?
)
and his influence surfaces so often in Jimmy's music
I was glad to hear that he played a few songs onstage in Honolulu just last Thursday night
and received a standing ovation, of course
sail on and on, tiny bubbles
