Would You Give It Back?

Post by SMLCHNG »

This is mostly directed to those who are baseball nuts, but certainly not limited to. :D

Just watching the Rockies and Diamondbacks. One of the Rockies lost his bat, and it went into the stands. A fan caught it, and refused to give it back to the player, even though he was offered another bat in exchange.

What would you have done?

Home team - give it back.

Visiting team - what goes in the stands, stays in the stands.

is there something special about that bat that the player needed it back? What were they going to replace it with? Does the one that went into the stands have better collector value?
I bet the player would have autographed the replacement.

Agree with Elrod, UNLESS the it's a milestone ball that ends up in the stands, like a big leaguers first home run, 200th HR, anything like that. I feel the game and acheivement is bigger.

As a long time season ticket holder back in our Texas days; at baseball games - what goes into the stands stays in the stands.

If a player wants a bat or ball back, an autographed replacement is pretty standard.

Keep the bat, and tell the guy to use more pine tar next time. If he doesn't like that answer, say you can press charges against him because he threw the bat at you, and that could be called attempted murder. Either way its just a frickin bat. And he probably only has 20 more in the clubhouse.

Some players get attached to a bat, and use only that one each and every time. I dunno about 'value'. Could be.

that's a tricky question...

If it's a bat from one my home team Padres, then, certainly i give it back without pause.

If it's a bat from the damned Dodgers or Bochy's Giants, ...then I strike one of their nearby travelling scumbag fans with it first! :P :o

The player is probably worried that the fan might discover the cork in the bat, and wants to replace it with an autographed "clean" bat.

Yup. Baseball has made me cynical lately (come back Cal Ripken).
