New laptop - old desktop - easiest way to...

...get files from point A to point B?
Laptop is Vista with Office Professional 2007
Desktop is Windows 98 with Microsoft Office 97... and everything I've ever done at work since 1999. The cd I copied stuff on to says it's read only...
Is there an easier way?
I do go back to the archived stuff at times, and this dinosaur will be getting the boot, so I need to transfer them, or have them accessible on a disc.
Thanks!

I'd recommend installing a wireless network and linking both the desktop and the new laptop into the network. Once done, you'll be able to access content from the desktop via the laptop and vice-versa.
Since you now have a laptop, you'll want the convenience of being mobile in your home and still being linked to your network.
Not the easiest thing to do though if you're a non-techie. Particularly making sure you secure your wireless network. It's sometimes best to pay the tech geek squads (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, etc.) to hook everything up for you.

I haven't tried this...yet, but USB cable the two computers together and you should be able to move files I think.

Copy all the binary code into a notebook, then type it into the new computer.

i have to agree with surfpirate. get them both on either wireless network or wired and then just map a drive betweeen the two and copy the data. if you need more in-depth detail just let us know and we will help.

If you only need everything on one computer...from old to new.... I a telling you Joanne... the cable I mentioned a few posts back is a dream. You select what you want put on the new computer... and plug it in and click a button.... IE favorites, pics, files, docs, even my desktop transferred.
but.....if you are gonna run two computers...the network is the way to go.

But the desktop is toast (the hard drive is now full - it's been really noisy grindy for months), and I'm the only one in the office who even knows how to turn a puter on. I need to pitch the desktop to make room for the laptop. Can't see any reason now for a network, but it sounded like a good idea!
I think I'll check out Susan's thing... sounds like something I could figure out!

On a related question, I'm going to be getting a laptop soon and I like Topless transfer cable, but if I can't find one for some reason, I was wondering if I could use a flash/pen drive to transfer music between computers instead of burning everything to CDs and importing them all?
And can I rewrite on a pen drive unlike a CD where once it's on the CD, it can't be rewritten?

CDs can be rewritten if you have CD-RW discs. Most people buy CD-R and not CD-RW. However a USB drive will work as long as the old PC has support for it. In the case of Win98 9 times out of 10 you need to download drivers from the manu as they are not included in the OS and 98 has/d very poor USB support. WinME has a similar issue. It was not until Win2k was released that MS finally had decient integrated USB support.
