I had forgotten the date of my schools shooting
but I know I was with my Lil sis the day it happened
we were running around just before Her HS. Graduation

The only reason I can remember when Columbus sailed the ocean blue is because it rhymes w/ "1492." But the point is that I REMEMBER it.

I may not recall the particular year...but April 19 is embedded in my memory...
When it goes from full to crescent...I move in and out of tune...Everlasting Moon....
1) News has become entertainment. That has been stated by many people, by many journalists, yet it is becoming worse not better. God forbid that the same amount of time given to talking about the whole Anna Nicole saga would be given to subjects such as Darfur, the plight of homeless children around the world, including the U.S., the continuing problems in LA and MS from Hurrican Katrina, basically any news or problems occurring that we might actually be stirred to demand answers from our government as to what they intend to do about it or to do something about it ourselves. And we are becoming inured to this. There are very few news programs where you actually get NEWS, and where that news is DISCUSSED by intelligent people with VARYING opinions. My main nightly news program is PBS's "The News Hour".
2) The insensitivity of news reporters is disgusting. I am old enough to remember when reporters wouldn't think of shoving a mike in someone's face who has just lost a loved one, and asking "How do you feel?" Well, how the f@#* do you think she feels! And these poor, hurting people are so used to seeing it on tv, that they feel they are obliged to answer. Or they are so traumatized that they don't even realize that these rating-mongers have no moral right to quiz them like that, and then wait in silence until the person stops crying long enough to answer them.
3) As Jimmy sings, "So connected and all alone." With the proliferation of so many call in radio and tv shows, as well as internet chat groups, we are losing the civilities of discussion that are there - or should be - when we talk face to face. With anonymity, many people feel they can say whatever they want, even if what they say or the way they say it is hurtful. And they spew hatefulness and provoke others into responding with equal or greater anger and hate. And, distressing as that is in and of itself, it has started to carry over into face to face interaction, and "discussions" are becoming arguments and fights, and people have become intolerant of other people's opinions. Also, this intolerance and shouting over another's opinion is an imitation of most of the call in show hosts, both liberal and conservative.
4) Specifically regarding Virginia Tech, most of what I feel I've said above. I don't have a problem with NBC initially running the story of the video and showing some of it. My problem is when they show it over and over. My problem is when they interview his roommates. My problem is when they interview his teachers. My problem is when they hound his family for comment. Gee, and just what newsworthy thing do you think they are going to say? Additionally my problem is when they make it sound like it's the fault of the roommates and teachers because they acted like you or I would because they never in a million years could even envision someone being sick enough to do something like that. And my problem is that I am sick of these "newspersons' " plastered on looks of sympathy as they continue to try to elicit more and more agonized comments from the survivors.
5) And I am glad that, for the most part, we here on BuffettNews try to be tolerant of each other's opinions, and try to make each other understand why we feel the way we do about issues. Name-calling is not discussion, explanation, education or debate.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"
I'd like to add, that just this morning, my son [8] asked me "Why does the news have to spend so much time talking about people dying?"
A little futher conversation revealed that he wants the news to report "good things", too.
I have to agree that more focus on the positive would be a good thing.
Some people never find it, some only pretend
But me, I just want to live happily ever after every now and then.
