i'm pretty sure it's copyright related...i'm surprised it was on radio margaritaville.

i was lucky enough to catch it live at buckeye lake during the "stumpo el bando" tour. the guy they brought on stage said he knew he would not stump the band...but wanted god's own drunk. jimmy laughed and when he began playing the song, the place went wild!

Yea no kidding would be a hell of a concert song too... We could all go on a rant of songs he doesn't play anymore. He's gotten way to popular is the problem, and has to please the "new" crowd would be my best guess. I think what really irritates me the most is when im sitting at a concert, and all the people around me don't even know the words to most of the songs. Yea, of course they know "Five O'clock Somewhere" because this is what got his name out there again. The participation in FINS was absolutely HORRIBLE in houston, but I'm hoping it was just simply because he played it so early, and no one was really ready for it at the time.

I actually had the liberty of hearing him play Ballad of Spider John in Houston this year, and that alone shocked the hell out of me. I'd love to hear most of his old stuff more than anything, Brahma Fear, Tampico Trauma, Migration, Nautical Wheelers, Trying to Reason with... you get the picture. I wonder why the hell he doesnt come back home and play, and why doesnt he come play at the college where he graduated from? I bet before he filmed the Bama Breeze video he probably hadn't been in Mississippi in 5-10 years. It sucks... let the ranting begin.

I use to post on Buffett News back in 2000 under the name of Ted. I occassionally scan the boards to see whats up. As for Gods Own Drunk this is the story.
Lord Richard Buckley was the original author of "God's Own Drunk." Lord Buckley's son who managed the estate after Lord Buckley died sued Buffett over the use of "God's Own Drunk" claiming that Buffett had not paid for the rights and even more, had recorded a perverse version ofGod's Own Drunk. They got an injunction against Buffett which prevented him from performing the song until the lawsuit was settled or resolved. So, in 1986 when Buffett would get to the part of his show where he would normally perform "God's Own Drunk," he would say that he still isn't allowed to play it because of the lawsuit and instead played a song he wrote called "The Lawyer and the a**hole" in which he accuses Buckley's son and lawyers as being greedy and tells them to kiss his ass.

The lawsuit has been resolved for years now and I've heard Jimmy do the song just once since and I can't remember where or when. (No pun inteneded for you old folks). But it was some time in the late 80's or in the 90's. They orginally wanted to sue Jimmy for $11 million dollars and he use to say in concert back then, "if they can find it they can have it". How times have changed.

not if you count Kenny's perfectly weathered hat...put's him about a 1/4" over the top, well if you count the 2" risers in his boots too.

Yes I would! Two things would happen. 1) I would call my grandmother at whatever hour it was. ( inside joke) 2) You would hear me and Jimmy only on Radio Margartiaville because I would be singing so loud!

I don't remember the year, but he played it in Raleigh during the early to mid 90's. That's one and only time I have ever heard it live.

Several thoughts.

I thought it had not been played because it is one of the worst songs Jimmy has ever done. Absolute bottom 5 ever, and as u can tell I am not one ofd the idiots that posts "Jimmy has never done a bad song"

Lovre any post that references the "infamous" Buckeye Lake show of 1993. God it sucks to get old. I have that show oin tape but have mercifully blocked out that travesty of a song.

Still amusing to watch how threatened some Buffett fans are by Mr. Chesney. Imagine how threatened you would be if you have seen him live.

I remember Jimmy performing it at Great Woods during
the mid 90s. I think any time we hear a rarity live(whether
we like the song or not) it makes the concert unique.

hate to burst your bubble, but I have seen him live and I thought he was a pretty average entertainer that sings average (and on occasion, slightly above-average) songs. When I've seen him he appears more interested in shaking his hips and thrusting his pelvis than he is in giving a really good show (musically speaking).

And I don't feel threatened by KC because he will never, NEVER, be able to live up to Jimmy in my mind (and I would say, even for other KC fans on BuffettNews, this is also true). He may step in once Jimmy retires to help fill the void, but he'll never be a phenomenon. There was, is, and will only ever be ONE Jimmy Buffett.
