Former astronaut Wally Schirra, the only man to fly on the Mercury (Sigma 7), Gemini (Gemini 6), and Apollo (Apollo 7), spacecraft has died at age 84.
One of my childhood heroes, as were/are ALL astronauts-especially the during NASA's early years, this man was a true pioneer and warrior.
Sail on, Mr. S.
Only John Glenn and Scott Carpenter survive as the original seven Mercury astronauts.

For those of us who were teenagers in the early 60's, astronauts WERE heroes and along with baseball stars, most of my friends could name the " big" astronauts.
Wally Schirra certainly was one of the biggest.
Sail on Wally Schirra.

There was NOTHING more thrilling, frightening and exciting on live TV back in the 60's (or since for that matter) than watching those Mercury, Gemini and later Apollo launches. They were all heroes. Godspeed Mr. Schirra.

I remember being a very young girl in the 60s and wondering why the "indians" didnt come to pick up those astronauts who landed in the middle of the Indian Ocean. What fond memories.... Sail on Mr. Schirra
Godspeed Wally
