The Fish Philosophy

Post by creeky »

(I realise this has the potential to go straight to the gutter .. but )

Has anyone read the "FISH" books on the Fish philosophy from the Pike Fish Market in Seattle?

I am now on the second book - and feelin fishy

Today I am choosing my attitude .... to party

But .. I have taken some of it on board -a nd it has helped me as a leader at work - mainly in engaging my team and helping to empower them to make decisions.

I am going to the market when in Seattle and cant wait!

Completely unaware of them..... So what is the basis of the philosophy??? If you throw the fish and they don't catch it, they gotta buy it????

They are a happy workforce and it looks at the factors that create it. The first book "Fish" goes through how a leader working in a "toxic dump" started talking to one of the employees and it goes through the journey of her development as a leader.

I read it in a day!

We had another session on it the other week at a leadership forum at work - and as I had read the book - they made me a cheer leader  - anyway - I went up to the bosses later and told them I am going to Seattle in October - and going to the fish market - any chance of it being tax deductable as a business trip?

I micro managed. .. I didnt trust people to do things on their own - cause I know best ... I still think that - but now they have a say.

eg we had a major major crisis last week - quite damaging - in our team - so instead of me reading the riot act - next wednesday we are having a workshop so the team can discuss how we can put in place preventative issues.

The book is readily available here and not expensive - so guessing it is easily available in USA and cheap!

we use their philosophy in training at school....for support personnel, not sure if the certified staff use it or not...

one of the few training sessions that are not completely boring..

perhaps some of them should... :o

Well, it's for your own good. Besides...
Catch-22 states that agents enforcing Catch-22 need not prove that Catch-22 actually contains whatever provision the accused violator is accused of violating.
So there's no sense complaining.

Sounds like something I need to check out. I love the thing about choosing your attitude- it is so true. Sounds like the Fish Philosophy works well not only for business but also for families- I know when I choose to have a happier attitude it does filter down to the kids and their attitudes which having teenagers is always challenging.

Interesting.... I learned early on in my carreer that there are basicaly 2 types of captains (or engineers or deck bosses..etc) there are screamers, and there are "the cool as cucumbers". I have always respected the cucumbers and try to eminate them. The world can come crashing down around them (literally out on the ocean...) and they take a deep breath and calmly organize and direct the crew, relying on them to do their jobs, encouraging and empowering them to change their and everbodies situation.
The screamers....well I'm sure you have your own experience ...needless to say I have done whatever I could to avoid being a screamer....

At the plant after we had gotten through whatever the crisis might have been, I would get the crew together and review what we had learned ( the key here is to have an open, frank discussion about what happened and what ideas we can come up with to prevent it in the future....My moto was/is that the true tragedy would be if we didn't learn anything). It is an amazing thing to sit back and watch the crew analyse a situation and come up with some truely amazing insights and ideas....way cool stuff....
