Who owns a rabbit?

Post by sy »

So hubby was mowing the lawn yesterday and comes in toward the end and hands me the cutest little baby bunny (not tiny baby, but I would say fairly young) wrapped up in a towel. I went out and it looks kind of like either the burrow was destroyed or something happened (at least, where we thing he/she may have come from if it was wild). Apparently, this bunny has been hanging around for the last couple of days and I just never noticed (maybe it's someone's pet who got loose, I haven't any idea).

At any rate, he/she seems healthy, alert, clean, and in generally good health and disposition. I had an old cage I kept from when we had ferrets years back, so I put him/her in there for the evening. We haven't decided on whether or not to keep the little one, but of course we want to (and yes, I've already called the vet for an appointment)

My question is I've never owned a bunny in my life and I wanted to hear any spins from my fellow bn'ers as to what a bunny takes to care for. Any recommendations on books, or anything in particular?

Seriously, I've never had a rabbit, although my husband had several as a kid, which all were ultimately eaten by foxes... so make sure their hutch is secure.

Here's a link that might help. You also may want to contact you local animal welfare organization for advice and tips. Good luck!

A couple of years ago, I inadvertendly left the door open from the back yard to the patio, and when I went out there the next morning to read the paper and drink my coffee, I was startled when I discovered four baby bunnies sleeping in the corner, huddled together for warmth.
I then looked outside and saw the mother under one of the bushes, watching me in horror, thinking I was going to have her babies for a snack.
Instead, I brought out one of my pet beds that the dogs were no longer using (since they use OURS), and the little bunnies got on it (after I stepped away), and the mother joined them shortly afterwards. This went on for several nights-sleeping on our patio at night, and roaming the neigbhorhood during the day. As they became more comfortable with us, my wife made them a couple blankets, which they use to this day. (Only they aren't babies anymore).
Some nights they come by to camp out on our patio, and other times we don't see them for days. But they're all four still around, and so is the mother.
They actually eat dog granules, but we also buy rabbit food from the vet's. They love lettuce, carrots, of course, and just about any type of SOFT "people" food.
Had we known they'd still be around after almost two years, we probably would've made an appointment for them at the vet's, but we figured just let them run loose during the day and, if they want, they're welcome to use our patio for their home. We actually made it pretty comfy for them-especially in the winter.
They're a joy to watch-but we still haven't named them, since we never did officially "adopt" them. 8)
But we feed them whenever they're hungry, and give them a place to sleep and be warm.

I've been known to try and become acquainted with a few Playboy bunnies but I've proven unsuccessful there. I feel I would be of NO help at all.
The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

We had bunnies living under our porch last year. I think they found a better place to make babies this year, either that or our neighbor's new cat is doing an excellent job.

I swear you tell the best stories, Garry. I could listen to them all day.

I'm really thinking on making him/her a permanent member now...just because I keep looking at the damned picture (because I need yet another pet....  )

Out here in NO CAL there's a Wildlife Rescue organization that helps in these sort of situations. They were great when my dauchsund "retreived" a wild turkey chick and brought it home. You might have a group like that too.

We had a lop eared rabbit that we kept in a cage but it was really, really messy and stinky. So we finally turned him loose in our backyard, which was fenced in, and he loved it. I had a pomeranian dog and they were so cute together. They would both lay on their tummies with their back feet stretched out behind them. The funniest thing, I had gotten a swing for Mother's Day and my feet would dangle while I was swinging back and forth, not touching the ground. The rabbit would stand up on his hind legs and grab onto my feet and try to hump them. I guess he had a foot fetish or something!!! Once he got ?weevils and we had to take him to the vet but the vet took care of them and we had medicine to put on his sores.

Why not? I'd probably be able to get front row parking at the grocery store, ball games, etc.
