When I think back to all the stupidity I've seen him spew on the news (much less his farce of a show), and I think of all those who mindlessly heed whatever he would say, I can honestly say he is one useless news magnet I will not be sorry to never see again.
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all..

I met Jerry Falwell at a sports hall of fame induction dinner.
It happened to be the same day as my younger brother's birthday
who had just returned from his first deployment to Iraq (army).
I handed him a cell phone and asked him to leave a message on
my brother's answering machine wishing him happy birthday and
telling him he was glad he came home alright. I screwed up and
got disconnected when I handed the phone to Rev. Falwell and the
message didn't go out. I explained what happened and Jerry just
smiled and said "Well we'll just do it again then". He repeated the
message, smiled, and shook my hand.
Now I didn't always agree with alot of things he said, but from then
on, anytime someone mentions Jerry Falwell, I tell them that he was
a hell of a nice guy.

From Yahoo:
Falwell had made careful preparations for a transition of his leadership to his two sons, Jerry Falwell, Jr., now vice-chancellor of Liberty University, and Jonathan Falwell, executive the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
Interesting that his Church is essentially the family business.
My favorite Falwell story is when Tammy Faye Baker describes in an E True Hollywood story type show that her husband Jim thought he was giving Falwell control of his PTL church on a "temporary" basis to rehabilitate the PTL organization while Baker faced tax fraud charges. Turns out poor Jim and Tammy Faye were duped by Jerry into giving him total and permanent control of PTL. Talk about honor amongst thieves
Tammy Faye, though, actually seems to embody the Christian spirit now. She was very interesting in her years after PTL and her passing from cancer will be very sad, in my opinion.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

Attending college in Lynchburg, VA back in the early 90s (not at Liberty, thank God) Jerry was very much a presence in day-to-day life.
It was always funny to see his students out flying the holier-than-thou flag and spewing fire and brimstone during the day, and sneaking into our keg parties at night -- they definitely wanted to learn how to score.
I'm sure there was some kernel of good intention in Jerry's blather, but it's scary that so many took everything he said so seriously.

Originally being from Lynchburg I literally saw him everyday either on TV or in town. My mom knew him and his wife, she didn't really care for him too much but she was polite to him around his wife.
I met him numerous times and though I disagreed with a lot of the stuff he did, he was extremely polite and cordial to me. I both bashed and agreed with some of his ideas for the 25 years I lived in Lynchburg.
Now out of respect for his family now isn't the time or place for me to do it again. I also posted on the Sail on thread.
