My neighborhood is engulfed in smoke. Can't see across the street. There are flames across the main road from me and frankly this is scary as hell !!!! We haven't been evacuated yet, but friends a few blocks away have.
All main roads out of our development are closed. Schools are being used as shelters....
To think .... first the Air Guard hit the school by accident 2yrs ago, now they set the county on fire....WHAT NEXT ? !!

All windows shut, air is on and the garage smells like I'm standing in the middle of it....STINKS....

Anyone know how to get the smell out of your belongings when it's over.....like an ashtray [smilie=thumbdown.gif]

call a large janitor supply house.. it's called ODOR ZONE
it's in granule form. it kills a lot of odors.

Not sure, but you should have a fire and restoration business around there. They do good work, usually, but you will probably have to wait in line. I fought some forest fires in the late 90's, the destruction is pretty widespread. Best wishes and phin power to you and yours. Hope that smoke damage is the worst of your troubles.

Mr.OC called a couple hours ago and said it was scary as crap. He had to get to Toms River and some other town out in that direction mile marker 66 on pkw and every road he was on had at the most a half mile visibility. Now he's working on a roof top and ashes are blowing all over the place. He is trying to finish this job and get out of that area as quickly as possible. He's anticipating the parkway closing and is thinking rt.9 will be a mess.
Are you following the news because I think there are more evacuations coming. I'd actually consider putting together a package of your valuables and important papers, and a day or two of clothes just in case. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

Again, a heads up, as mr.oc is all over this area today in a commercial vehicle that's allowed to travel when some roads are closed, he says it's really getting bad on most roads. I just got off the phone to him. He's not one to overstate things. So definitely get things ready and have several alternate routes planned for if you have to leave. Do you have a place to go if you really need to?

Fortunately rain is forcasted for this evening. Hopefully with that, the winds will die down and the threat will diminish. We have had a fairly wet spring. I am surprised that this spread so quickly.

Best wishes to all in the path of this. Living how and where I do, fire - forest and otherwise - are among my biggest fears.

UPDATE

Smoke is really bad this morning. Went to mailbox to get newspaper and gagged all the way back up driveway. Ash all over the car. Fire line has moved away and the main road is reopened. Schools are closed for they are being used as shelters for all the nursing home residents.

Need the rain that is expected. [/b]

We haven't had substantial rains in over 21 days per Forest Fire Service. Area burning has not burned in over 30yrs and is mostly underbrush which is like fuel.
Just came home and received notice that the Animal Shelter may have to be evacuated. Anyone wishing to take in one of these precious guys, please call the Ocean County Animal Shelter at
Phone: (609) 978-0127
You don't have to adopt the animal, just give it fresh air for a few days !!
