Prince Harry Stays Home - Iraq Too Dangerous

I guess the propaganda value of having Prince Harry fight "insurgents" in Iraq was outweighed by the negative impact of him possibly getting killed doing it. We should all be so lucky to have the Queen of England for a grandmother.
Maybe Elizabeth II could be persuaded to adopt all the troops currently serving in Iraq (trust me she can afford it) and thus keep EVERYONE out of harm's way.

One of our morning tv shows had fun with this this morning ...
As they reported ...
Apparently the UK head of Army went to Iraq and looked and thought - "ooh this looks dangerous"
I think it is a common sense decision - it is a dangerous place as it is - but those poor soldiers that would be in his unit might as well have a big bullseye on their chest ... such a target they would be - more so than others.

Despite my slightly more favorable view on the war in Iraq then most have, I think that the Bush daughters should have to serve just as principle . . . and you probably do not want to know what I think of the royal family or the 1,000s of acres of land they should not own or the 100s of millions of dollars that really isn't theirs . . . Hanky should go fight like everyone else.

He wants to. The Army won't let him. Creeky's right - the guys in his unit would be put in an inordinate amount of danger because of his presence.....

So? They are a Division. A Unit. Unless Britain's military is different then the United State's that is a non factor. He is a privledged pussy (excuse the language) and that is it. He is no different then our version of military dodgers like our current president (yes, I know he did something) or Bill Clinton (who I like . . .). You don't know that Henry wanted to go . . . and I know that you know that. I am sure he is a good kid; a smart kid with ambition but I do not buy that he wanted to go nor do I buy that the reason for his free pass is out of fear of these grundgy insurgents who are nothing more than playground bullies. He would have been protected from god on down just like any other soldier.
My opinion. But I do have to ask: have you ever served? I am sure his Division that he trained with and became a single unit are not pleased with this decision.

I'm thinking he hasn't been paying particular attention, eh?
And in response to the part above that I bolded, yes, I do know that he wanted to go. And no, I'm not at liberty to tell you how I know that... OPSEC, you know.....

Has SGA served? If so, great! If not, whatever . . . just a question that I apparently has already been established around here. Because I am not in the know on this I asked. I will know change the question to "what branch" as my inferencing abilities know no bounds.

it is a phrase. If we are getting philosophical I suppose no one ever has to do anything. I was curious. Is there a reason people are getting defensive over asking if SGA served? Is it proper Buffett blogging manners to go back and read prior posts before asking a question . . . figured it was cool to ask.

Sorry for asking. What was I thinking? Seriously though - all my best. Have shared many a nice talk around these boards with people who have served, are serving, want to serve, etc. Didn't mean to pry.

Both of us have served. I was in the
ROYAL Australian Artillery for 10 years.
So - here it is ... he has been interviewed - HE HAS SAID HE WANTS TO GO .... I dont think anyone made him say that. I find your post to be from someone that obviously does not see a lot of world news. He has put out a statement this morning re his disappointment.
So - I ask - the UK send him - and you can go be one of the sitting ducks in his unit - I sure would not want to be - its basically a suicide mission for those guys - how stupid would that be?

I politely and respectfully disagree. From what I have read (which holds about as much water in my opinion as Henry saying he wants to go - maybe that was honest, maybe not) he would have been protected within roughly a half mile radius and would not have been active field. If I am wrong then I am wrong. He could have been a great contributor within his role. If the danger level was assessed at being that high then I suppose people in charge made the decision they felt necessary. Again, I repsectfully disagree with it.

I respectfully inform you his name is Harry ....
Again HE had nothing to do with this decision - direct your opinions to the Army General or whoever that canned the thing.

You're entitled to your opinion, but you are incorrect when you say he would not have been "active field." If he's in Iraq, he's a target. It's virtually impossible to stop a dedicated suicide bomber. We have to get lucky every single day. They only have to get lucky once. There is no "safe" place in Iraq.
