I can't believe I actually have this photo handy. I was 10 years old that summer of '69, and I took this photograph of our television set while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were walking on the moon and Walter Cronkite was describing the grainy pictures to America. I feel like I'm 10 years old again and the whole world of possibilities are avalable to me all over again just looking at this picture and remembering how I felt.

Here's what my stupid little polaroid captured:

and here's what it actually looked like on TV: Image

I never saw two of them in the same place at the same time... hmmm... :-?

I've always credited Uncle Walter for my lack of a heavy southern accent.

Oops! I just noticed how much I've grown to look like Capt. Kangaroo. Could be worse, I guess.

Of course not! They were arch-enemies, remember?
Rivals for the attention of one Anne Jeanne Laurie, I believe.

Yes! I seem to remember Captain Kangaroo and Dancing Bear conspiring with Mr. Green Jeans to go into the Howdy Doody camp on the far side of the island to rescue Bunny Rabbit who had been kidnapped by Buffalo Bob and his mysterious band of characters know only to the Captain as the "Others".

Along the way though, they began to realize that Mr. Moose loyalties were uncertain (had he joined forces with the "Others"?). Mr. Moose always did have some sort of mysterious connection to the strange island and there was no natural explanation for the strange attacks by the mysterious force which summoned ping pong balls to rain from the sky.

It was strange television for those days. That would never make it onto TV today.

He sure was a part of my growing up. It seems to me I heard that Jimmy was one of only 20 guests at some party for Cronkite recently. I know they are friends. Remember Walter introducing a song( Beach House on the Moon ) ?
Wasn't he the voice-over for the intermission video, or something like that? Seems like I also remember pictures of him sailing with Jimmy, too?
Walter Cronkite is a sailing enthusiast, who will occasionally be found in McGarvey's (Annapolis) enjoying a bowl of thier famous black bean soup after making landfall there.

In 1996, I met, shook hands with, and got the autograph of Eugene Cernan, the Commander of the Apollo 17 mission, and the last man to walk on the moon. He also had previous flights on Apollo 10 and Gemini 9.
He said one of the first phone calls he received when he returned from the moon was from Walter Cronkite congratulating him for his accomplishments.
Wow how cool!

I remember Tom Terrific carrying out a clandestine mission while riding bare back on Mighty Manfred! And as Miss Joan from Romper Room spied on everyone with her Magic Mirror, Winky Dink escaped capture by running over a bridge which was quickly erased by his comrad.

And my mother was part of all of the colussion - she still knew it was 7:30 and time for all good girls and boys to go to bed, even after I'd turned off the TV so she couldn't hear Claude Kirschner and Clowny say so!

He did it with such enthusiasm-it literally made you feel like you were right there.
If I live to be 1,000, I'll never forget the afternoon of July 20, 1969, when he and the late astronaut, Wally Schirra, were covering the first moon landing. I was watching it with my grandmother, grandfather, and great uncle (all of whom are now deceased). Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were within 30 seconds of having to abort the landing due to extremely low fuel, then I heard Armstrong say "Contact light on, engine stop." Buzz Aldrin then said something I couldn't distinguish, and, with that, Walter yelled MAN ON THE MOON!
He and Schirra were shown both with tears in their eyes.
It was a moment for the ages.

That's the way you were, Walter-THE GREATEST!
I've got goosebumps! What great times those were!

Did any of you have this green plastic "screen" thingy that you put on the tv screen (static made it stick). I don't remember if it was for Howdy Doody or what. Or what the purpose was. To imitate color? Or to reveal a secret code? Anybody remember?

If it was multicolored, it was to make fake color TV.
If it was solid pale green (I think), it was to draw on
with crayons during Winky Dink!
