Music for School Celebration

For the most part, students aren’t allowed to have ‘parties’ in middle school classes anymore. However, teachers often get around it by planning ‘course specific celebrations’. LOL…’gotta love creativity to get around stupid rules and I encourage it. (For Latin class last December, they had a full fledged Saturnella!)
Anyway, my daughter’s Social Studies teacher is planning a year end, ‘course specific celebration’ based on the last unit of the year….The Caribbean!
When they were going over the cultural elements to include in the celebration, music came out as a detail to be looked after, of course. (Right after food…lol!)
Several of my daughter’s classmates immediately volunteered her to supply the soundtrack. She’s known for having an iPod filled with Bob Marley, Harry Belefonte, Jimmy Buffett (of course), Toots and the Maytals, and songs in languages she doesn’t speak well (Juanes, Kali, Shakeria (Juanes and Shakeria are Colombian…but let’s not quibble with kids planning music for a party….lol) etc etc.
However, we think the list of actual Caribbean music we have is still quite superficial for what is out there. I would like it expose the some of the kids to a genre of music they might not pay attention to otherwise.
So….The floor is open for suggestions….songs, artists, sites where I can pick up some legal downloads,(free is good, though I will pick up a few from iTunes or buy a CD or so, especially if someone can suggest a good compilation.) Traditional folk music, Reggae, Trop Rock…it doesn’t matter…from any of the Islands….we are really just looking for good songs from the whole region. (Mr. W, the teacher has tried very hard to teach the fact that the different island groups often have vastly different cultural underpinnings, I’d like to reinforce that is a practical way the kids will notice.
So please, help my ‘keet keep up her reputation and help the kids have their party!
