Coffee starts to lose its flavor the day after it's roasted, but there are circumstances that mitigate (or aggravate) the process.

Whole bean coffee maintains its flavor longer than ground coffee and sealed containers help too. But any airtight container will start to blow up like a balloon unless there is a way to vent the gasses that come off the coffee. Unfortununately you can't put these gasses back into the beans, so that accounts for some of the flavor loss.

I don't keep coffee beans for more than a month or two, so I have never had any problem with them losing flavor. The stuff you found will probably taste a little weak or off-balance, but I'm sure it won't kill you. (As long as there is no mold growing on it  )

If you want to use it without buying a grinder, you can improvise a mortar and pestle to crack the beans before brewing. It will taste the same.

Using them in the smoker sounds yummy. Although you're burning coffee beans, and burnt coffee's not so good.... Let me know how it turns out!

And a blender will work in a pinch for a coffee grinder.

Me knowing you, knowing me, knowing you, knowing me, knowing you,

I would say that we both should probably go to bed, but how would we

ever adjust to doing something somewhat normal?

Wayne,

Using them in the smoker is about the best use of ANY Charbucks beans, but when you don't know how old they are don't use them. First of all it would not taste good and life is way to short to drink bad coffee. But the other reason is that coffee can go rancid. Because they were sealed they may not have gone rancid, but I would not take any chances. Its not worth it.

:o :o OK I found my notes..please do not tell my family I made notes
they will rib me to no end.

you use a "water smoker" and you put the beans in a wet tray
above the water bowl.. keep the beans moist, even wet..
they never really smoke.. but they do impart a nice flavor

you could even just put them in the water bowl of the "wet smoker"
I sometimes use wine (for a short smoke) or
beer and I always add spices and herbs to my water bowl..

and.. next chance you get.. Try the Eel MMMM 8)

Sounds good, but what's a water smoker? We just bought a great big new grill, so we're ready for some new recipes. I'll check for eel at the sushi bar tomorrow (it's in the back of a Japanese grocery store).

Do you have The Barbecue Bible? It's just about the only cookbook we use.
