Allllright people! Tell me about grits!!!

I've never had them, but I think they are going to become a staple in my house now that Malt-O-Meal and Oatmeal are out of the question.

I know they are s'posed to be good with eggs, bacon, etc. but I'm looking for a lighter more health-conscious recipe I can feed to the kiddos on a regular basis. Is there anyway to make them a sweet breakfast rather than a salty one?

Oh gah I love them, I salt/pepper/butter them. They are so yummy. Here in the South, you get them with your breakfast. Some people put sugar and butter in them. Or syrup. Or brown sugar. :D

Being the Suthun' gal that I am, I grew up on grits.....I have to say I have never eaten them sweet. Sometimes I have them just plain with a dab of butter and a little salt, I love to put cheese in them--not too health-conscious, though, I guess.

You can check out http://www.grits.com/recipes/list.php?p ... egoryid=14
They have a list of recipes there--didn't see many sweet ones, though.

I think I'll just try them with butter and salt to start and see if the kids take to them. My son will eat anything that doesn't eat him first, but my daughter, although not picky, used to drool over the MaltOMeal every morning. She's uberbummed she can't have that for breakfast anymore.

I tried grits once. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to try them a second time. It's like eating wet sand. [smilie=thumbdown.gif]

I had grits in a Waffle House in the south. I figured they'd know how to make southern food. Aside from tasting bad, why would anyone eat something called "grits"? :o

Much like the Tooth Fairy, sasquatch, and an exciting baseball game, there is no such thing.

On a similar note, we tried polenta this weekend which is a corn meal loaf thing seasoned with Italian spices. It was WAY yummy. It comes in a roll like Jimmy Dean sausage and you slice it and saute it and yumm! We put parmesan and marinara on top and it was so good!

We thought it would be good for breakfast with some sausage and an egg, so I figured that would be kinda what grits was like.

Vinny Gambini: How could it take you five minutes to cook your grits when it takes the entire grit-eating world 20 minutes?
Mr. Tipton: Um... I'm a fast cook, I guess.
Vinny Gambini: [across beside the jury] What? I'm sorry I was over there. Did you just say you were a fast cook? Are we to believe that boiling water soaks into a grit faster in your kitchen than any place on the face of the earth?
Mr. Tipton: I don't know.
Vinny Gambini: Perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on your stove. Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans?

A winery served polenta with a pork stew this weekend. It was AWESOME! It was I would have gladly paid over $20.00 a plate at a nice restaurant good. Polenta's become a trendy California specialty over the past few years.
