Not a Chesney fan . . . but he no more a fraud than Jimmy . . . Mr. Buffett steals/ borrows so many songs like Brown Eyed Girl and Southern Cross to numerous others that No One Can Call Other Artists Frauds Who Sound Like Him.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

His new CD title was released to the press today and it sounds very Jimmy like.
Here is info about it from gac.com
June 4, 2007 — Kenny Chesney has decided to title his next album Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates, and he says it is his most reflective project yet.
"I tried on so many titles, but in the end, it was the simplest name that fit this record the best," Kenny says. "At the end of the day, you strip it all off, and that's what it comes down to: great songs that are about the smallest things and people who are living just beyond the rules."
Kenny says being a pirate isn't just about wearing an eye patch and sailing the seas. "A lot of my friends in the islands, they're living the pirate life and you could say that anyone living on the road, always waking up somewhere else, they're living the pirate life, too," he says. "But I think a lot of my fans, they're really the pirates. You know, they show up at the office, but their souls never leave the ocean or the lake or wherever they get away to. Their spirit is free, even though they look like one more 9-to-5'er or shift worker."
Kenny is still picking tracks for the CD, but he does know the first single will be "Never Wanted Nothing More," a song about the stages of coming of age. "It really is how life is lived, what we want and the way nothing else feels like the moment you finally get it," he says. "This song isn't maybe what people are expecting, but then the best things never are."
Kenny has been working on the new album, which will contain his first new music in two years, between dates on his Flip Flop Summer Tour. No word yet on when the album will be released

I honestly don't get this . . . judgemental Parrot Heads. Weird. Let people like what they like. Jimmy has made an empire sounding like people before him and we are all cool with it. Why so defensive about artists like Chesney? I think this touches on a fascinating topic. I think the Buffett road reached a fork at some point in the last decade or so. Down one road are the artists like Jack Johnson and Matt Costa who live the escapism of albums like "Changes". The other road cuts through Nashville where it found a very willing audience for the idea of living the escapism and provided Kenny Chesney and the like.drunkpirate66 wrote:I honestly don't get this . . . judgemental Parrot Heads. Most rock and roll can be traced all the way back to guys like Robert Johnson strumming a guitar somewhere at a crossroads in Mississippi. There are those who carry on this tradition every night they plug into an amp. There are those who play into a system of popular culture which tells (sells) the listener what it thinks it wants to hear.
I believe Chesney falls firmly in the latter. Chesney is packaged "escapism" for those who are afraid to let go of their material lives and escape for real. When JB started playing in tiny bars, he was carrying on the former tradition. Did his music jump the shark at some point and begin packaging escapism just like those who copy him? Maybe.
For me, I had to swallow very hard to digest the "Beach House" album and a lot of what has come after. However, I like to imagine Jimmy is on stage "winking" at the Parrot Heads who see through all the hype and get it. The Parrot Heads who kick back with a cup of kava and some old Marley cassettes.

Proper English? He cares about his appearance?
Same with Chesney? I don't get it.
After I went on a diet and lost a bunch of weight I started dressing better, working out and a couple of my friends now joke that I'm gay. I don't get it. Because I care about my appearance?

The Jeff Gordon thing is hilarious to me. I guess Nascar fans need some kind appropriate hick image with their drivers . . . all those guys are rich and own mansions and have maids and limos and yachts BUT Gordon gets picked on. And why? Because he has a clean cut appearance? Don't get that either. Do the people who make fun of Gordon because he does have a "Nascar" appropriate image believe that Jimmy Buffett is actually a beach bum because that is the image they believe or want to believe?sonofabeach wrote:Seriously, what makes some people say Jeff Gordon is gay?Marnin Grita Guy wrote:....maybe it's "midget".Big Jimmy wrote:Rumor I had heard that there was a password for a few select shows

I think most us go through the Jimmy beach bum thing. With his 2 million dollar penthouse in NYC and villa's in the Carribbean that he flies to in one of three dozen private jets that image quickly disappeared for me. Oh sure, he rides through Lorient to some of the St. Barth's surf spots and hangs out on Surfside here on Nantucket from time to time but it has been decades since he lived like he sings about. And that is okay. The point it that along with Jeff Gordon and other famous individuals people need an image. Short hair and clean shaven face - no way could you race a car Jeff!!!! I remember when the Stones played Boston Keith Richards was photographed coming out of Newbury Stree nail salon where he just had his toes worked on . . . and people were like, "no way man - Richards to a rocker!!! No way would he do that . . . "sonofabeach wrote:About eight years back I thought thatdrunkpirate66 wrote:The Jeff Gordon thing is hilarious to me. I like Kenny a lot. He started in clubs and bars too- it is not like he appeared magically packaged by Nashville to play stadiums while wearing puka shells. He paid his dues.
Interesting comments about who artists are versus what they sell. It is so true. Jon Bon Jovi is far from living on a prayer anymore as a Jersey boy trying to make it but his fans (I am one) buy the whole working class rock thing anyway. I am glad the artists I like have made it big and are enjoying success. I know I would if I were them
As for Jeff Gordon, he is cute and all but I am a proud member of Junior Nation

I think some people are way overanalyzing this. If you look at Kenny's statements he uses a lot of same words and ideas that JB has pretty much made famous. Yes JB was not the first, but he is definately the most famous to have the whole 'island escape' thing. We should not begrudge anyone who follows similar footsteps, but by calling his fans "pirates" and saying they are normal 9-5ers that escape to paradise at his shows, well it is kinda similar.
Me, I really dont care for his music, but it has nothing to do with Jimmy.
And you know how I know Jeff Gordon is gay? He likes Coldplay
