My wife is afraid to go to Jamaica...
We have already purchased our tickets, prepaid the resort fees, etc.
But now she's really not wanting to go. here's why:

For those of you who have been there... what should I tell my wife? Tell me something that I can take to her to make her feel better about it.
Thanks, y'all

Are you going to a resort or on a cruise? The resort should be safe, you might want to consider eliminating side trips is all....MrTwain wrote:We have already purchased our tickets, prepaid the resort fees, etc.

I have been to Jamaica 5 times...and going again in Nov..... this was an isolated incident..... it could have happened in Miami..... or anywhere else in the world. Its an unfortunate expereince for the people involved...but I wouldnt change my plans over it.
At the course where I golf.... on the back 9...... where its very wooded.... there are security people with dogs to protect the players from the "mountain people..." Its very reassuring!

We're going to a resort. I was just hoping to get some good, short, sound-byte words of wisdom from some BN'ers who know. I need to make her feel good about it. Ain't no way in hell I'm cancelling this tripSchoolGirlHeart wrote:Are you going to a resort or on a cruise? Re: My wife is afraid to go to Jamaica...
Been there many times over the years, last trip was 02, my grandparents lived there, you'll be fine at the resort, but I've wandered around many times, no issues, just like any other place, pay attenetion to what's going on around you and your location. They (the resorts and police) keep a very close eye on the resort area's, Negril, Montego, etc, they DO NOT want to loose that tourist trade!!!!MrTwain wrote:We're going to a resort. Re: My wife is afraid to go to Jamaica...
Like Topless said, it was an isolated incident that could have happened anywhere. The Jamaican police were on it fast and made an arrest, and like TR and AAB said (here's your sound bite), they'll be watching the resort areas even more closely right now since they don't want this sort of thing happening to tourists to take away those American tourist $$$ that they love!MrTwain wrote:We're going to a resort. We had a big vacation planned two months after 9/11....my husband really wanted to cancel....but I used just the logic that SGH mentioned...it's probably the safest time to go....right after an incident everyone will be hypervigilant.....we went and lived to tell the tale....and it was one of the best family vacations we ever had!

that only counts if you have Bono in the right seat. If you have The Edge, or one of the Cranberrys... you'll be fine..SharkOnLand wrote:Just don't try to land a seaplane in Jamaican waters.

Re: My wife is afraid to go to Jamaica...
Your wife is right. Jamaica can be really dangerous. You need to alleviate her fears and go somewhere else, local, and only about half the price of Jamaica. That way you can sell my wife and I your trip and with the money we give you, you should be just about able to clear the new trip.MrTwain wrote:We have already purchased our tickets, prepaid the resort fees, etc.

Just kidding. Everyone else here has said what I was going to. The resorts are enclaves apart from the local areas. And it doesn't matter what island, mainland or whatever you are on. Rest easy you will be totally fine.

As Jamaicans say - "no problem man". Enjoy yourself and if you want a good time go to Margaritaville on the beach at Negril. Met a Parrot Head last February there who had Margaritaville tattooed on her back and Jimmy's songs tattooed on her arms. She was on the cruise Freedom of the Seas - anyone know her?

I guess it depends on the area. Hell I could get robbed at Jax beach.
The port in Ochos Rios did not look so great to me. Trash, cars broke down and left on the side of the rode, really rough looking unmaintained streets.
I got offered weed on nearly every block by some really shady looking people.
I definitely would not wanna be there at night. Of course this was all the port area.
I'm sure there are areas like this in any country, hell everyone told me not to got to Mexico and I loved the area that I was in and never felt afraid. Just use common sense.

I worked with some people who told me they'd be "afraid to go the places you go" on vacation. I laughed and told them that if the islanders ever read about where they live (Saginaw Michigan), they'd be terrified to ever come visit them. They protested that they live in a "good" part of Saginaw.
It's like everywhere else. Bad things can happen in good places and good things can happen in bad places....
I see this as a "kind of " good news story. No one was hurt/killed and the bad guys were caught.
I'm one of the world's worst worriers....but I realize that if I let that take over, I'd never be able to leave my house...and never see the world.
I'd hate to get to the the end of my life and regret missing all those wonderful experiences but be able to say to myself...but at least I was safe....
