Cell phones

A while ago my weimie decided my cell phone looked tasty. It worked ok for few months after that, but it has now gone completely T.U. I'm about 8 months short of when AT&T will give me another free phone, and don't feel like paying $300 for a replacement.

I see the same model phone on Ebay for around $100. What's involved in buying one of those and getting it to work with my plan? My current phone has a chip, but I assume it's not as simple as putting that chip in a new phone, is it?

I figure I'll ask here, as I'm pretty sure AT&T isnt' going to give me a straight answer.

Oh, if it means anything, the auctions say the phone is unlocked, whatever that means.

From what I understand, if it's unlocked already you just need to put in or replace the sim card. Tmobile told me there was no cost for a sim card. If they didn't decide to help me that's what I was going to do. I don't know what unlocked means though.

Unlocked means it's not tied to a specific carrier. You should be able to just take the SIM card out of the old phone and put it in the new phone.

when I first read the post, I thought you said your "wienie" thought it looked good.... :o

I bought a cell phone off ebay once, when mine broke before I was due for a replacement. It didn't have a sim card; I just brought it in to the store and had it activated, as I remember.... Maybe I was even able to do that over the phone....

And thought it was odd that he'd admit what happened to it!

Just be sure when you buy the cell phone from e-bay that it's compatible with your carrier.

Here's the deal on cell phones...

Most new phones come out "locked" into a single carrier. That is, one from Cingular won't work with a SIM card from T-Mobile, etc.

If you buy an "unlocked" phone, it is NOT tied to a single carrier and should work with the SIM card out of your old phone. No problem. (BTW, it IS possible to unlock a phone, but it requires special software/knowledge - probably not worth the trouble.)

If you buy a phone that is not unlocked, just make sure it came from the same company you use. If you use Cingular, just make sure you buy a phone that was originally from Cingular. Your SIM card should let it work just fine.

Only other caution is this.... if your old phone is OLD, it may be running on OLD technology - if it's old enough, it may not even have the same type of SIM card that a newer, different model phone will require.

Good luck. :D

Thanks for the info...and for the weiner comments

My phone isn't very old, I got it less than a year ago. Will the same SIM card work in different makes/models, or do I need to buy the same one I now have?
