Please keep the families of the nine firefighters who perished Monday in your prayers.

This was the nation's deadliest single disaster for firefighters ssince the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

One of them was about the enter the Seminary in Summerville, where a family friend of ours is dean and my dad used to teach. Special fund below.

From: Cummins Theological Seminary, Tuesday, 6/19/07
One of the nine Charleston firefighters who perished in the store fire on Monday night was Firefighter Melvin Champaign, age 46, with the Charleston Fire Department for two years.
He was a nephew of the Rev. Hercules Champaign, B.Th., who is an alumnus of Cummins Seminary and pastor of James Island United Congregational Church, where Melvin was a member.
Late last year, Melvin and his uncle came to the Cummins Seminary campus, in Summerville, and met with the Dean, Canon Dr. Ron Moock. Melvin wanted to begin studying for Ministry, submitted his application, and was accepted as a student. However, because of his schedule, be was unable to start attending classes immediately, hoping to be able to do so this Fall (2007).
In this tragedy, please keep the Champaign family, and the families of the eight other fallen firelighters, in your prayers.

The City of Charleston has set up a special fund for the families of the nine firefighters. Anyone wanting to donate money to help the families may send a donation to The City of Charleston Firemen's Fund, P.O. Box 304, Charleston, SC, 29402, or make a donation at any Bank of America location in the Lowcountry area.

These guardian angels went into a burning building, got several people out, and lost their own lives doing so.
ALL of them, and every firefighter everywhere, is truly a heroes hero.
May their souls forever rest in peace and may God grant strength and perseverence to their families.

My heart is breaking for those families. My dad was a fireman for 28 years and did have some minor injuries and one fairly serious one. It always amazed us that he would run into a burning building to try to save people. Mom sent him off to work each day with a prayer and he wore a St. Florian medal she gave him ALL the time. It was something you hope no one ever has to deal with. Charleston is a very close community and they will be there for each other.

Dad sailed on 4 years ago and I know he greeted those men in heaven like the heros they are.

Daughter of a retired Phila. fireman here. It's so so sad. I'm glad to hear about the Bank of America info also. I"ve been to fireman funerals but never heard of a loss like this, other then 9/11.

Definitely, what was going through my mind was that three days before was the 25th anniversary of a hotel fire (can't remember the name of it now) on Commonwealth Avenue here in Boston where about the same amount of firefighters died in that blaze. Always give thanks for the police and firefighters, their jobs take them to do the opposite of human instinct.
