Another day another veto
Bush plans to veto
Fetal stem cell research is not illegal, George Bush just doesn't want the Fed Govt funding it. His position is because of moral grounds. I'm ok with that. I am opposed to it because I don't think the Fed Govt should be funding R&D that will benefit any private enterprise.
There is already a lot of stem cell research going on some is showing promise. Of the research with the best results (that is getting the press), most stems are from adults. Why can't congress pass a bill that supports non-fetal research? I would still be opposed but GB would probably sign it. Here some additional research would be funded - Not that the companies currently in existance are suffering, they have a lot of cash reserves and really don't need the money...now, at least the public companies do.

It 'will' (soon) benefit many people, not just private enterprises.
That's a weak argument considering our tax dollars are already supporting private companies in Iraq *cough* haliburton, etc *cough*
The end result from them is only helping fill their coffers & isn't helping sick people.
just my 2¢

Well he did veto, but issued an executive order.
Too bad congress couldn't come up with a signable bill.Bush's executive order will encourage scientists to work with the government to add research on new stem cell lines that does not involve the creation, harming or destruction of human embryos to the list of projects eligible for federal funding.

Actually, most of the federal funding goes to public institutions such as universities and hosipitals which rely on NIH (National Institutes of Health) or other govermental funding for support. Most private companies use their own money so that they are exempt from these federal funding restrictions. Many states in the Northeast and CA have started their own stem cell funding intiatives to support researchers so that they do not need to rely on federal funds.
As for the moral issues behind stem cell funding, I must admit I am a bit conflicted. There are serious ethical issues involved, yet possible benefits could be tremendous. I must stress though that these benefits are many years, if not decades away, no matter what the media says. A couple of groups are working on generating "embryonic stem cell-like" cells which might bypass the ethical issues, but again this is still far from being clinically applicabale.

Well at least two of his vetoes are from stem cell legislation.Nole Pirate wrote:Another day another veto? Hahahahaha. This is only his third veto in his admin. I am a Republican, but hardly a fan of Bush right now, but dems have gotten really good at playing the victim in recent months.
And what did the Dems think was going to happen when they took control of Congress? Bush was going to be all candy and roses and sign whatever bills they threw at him?
